I'm not a buckle collector, so i'd appreciate any info on what this large (6 1/4" x 3 3/4") brass buckle would be used for. I'm assuming it's part of a horse harness...but which part?? Have yet to find info on the net as to when the makers were in business. Guess I'll have to hit the local library to search through old directories.

Thanks for any help, and sorry about the crude cell phone pics.

Your buckle is what's known as an "express tug buckle" .. express being synonymous with "heavy driving harness" .. hence the beefiness of your buckle. Originally, your buckle would have been connected to a beefy leather band that would have wrapped around the "shaft." I have included a photo to show you where that buckle would have been located. I have a complete one in my collection. I probably have 25 or 30 of those that I have dug or found in old barns and tack rooms over the past 50 years.
