Large button with a heart?

Found this guy in a field here in Jersey, the site saw activity from the Rev. War and is still used today. Looks to have some real age to it, its iron backed and maybe filled with something, lead? Any ideas?

More likely heavy horse civilian use, mid-late 1800s (Heart patterns were common on Victorian horse tack)
