Acquired from an Old Timer's horribly neglected collection in western NYS. Former NYS Archeologist William Ritchie coined the term 'beveled' adz for this Lamoka cultural artifact, 5000-6000 years old. It is "the most diagnostic single trait of the Lamoka culture, and also the most carefully made of all stone artifacts of this phase." Ritchie hypothesized that the 'bevels' or 'facets' helped secure wooden wedges for tightening the adz in its haft. This specimen happens to also exhibit significant iron deposition.

Found primarily in the Genesee Valley region of central-western NYS, Lamoka beveled adzes have been sparingly found as far east as Hudson Valley, as far south as PA border, and as far west as Lake Erie.

This treasure was destined for a yard sale or a dumpster before I salvaged it. Imagine that.
