i'M SURE MOST HERE HAVE HEARD OF THE LEGEND OF EL DORADO THE CITY MADE OF GOLD. THIS MYTH ACTUALLY IS AN OVEREXAGGERATION OF A ANCIENT CEREMONY PERFORMED BY THE NEW KING TO APPEASE THE GODS IN LAKE GUATAVITA IN COLOMBIA. THE NEW KING AND HIS HIGH PRIESTS WILL THROW GOLD AND PRECIOUS STONES IN THE LAKE AS AN OFFERING TO THE GODS. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO DRAIN THE LAKE TO RETRIEVE THE GOLD. GOLD AND GEMS HAVE BEEN FOUND BUT BECAUSE THE LAKE WAS NEVER COMPLETELY DRAINED THE COST IN LIVES AND LABOR/EQUIPMENT EXCEEDED THE GOLD FOUND.

THE LAST ATTEMPT I KNOW ABOUT WAS IN 1965 BY AMERICAN & COLOMBIAN PARTNERS. THEY WERE ALSO UNSUCCESSFUL AND AFTER THAT THE COLOMBIAN GOVERNMENT DECLARED THE LAKE A NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE AND BANNED PRIVATE HUNTERS FROM EXPLORING THE LAKE.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF ANY DEVELOPMENT SINCE ? IF PEOPLE ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS STORY I CAN POST THE STORY OF THE INDIAN TRADITION AND THE EXPERIENCES OF EXPEDITIONS IN THE LAKE IN GREAT DETAIL.

I just saw a show on the History/Discovery channel called Digging the Truth. The host and a local archaeologist used scuba gear to explore the bottom of the lake. There were no metal detectors that I saw. They were also looking for some pyramids 100 miles away. They hiked through some very thick jungle. They decided to turn back and get an aerial view. An aerial view was as close as they got.

DAMN. TOO BAD I MISSED THIS. DID THEY MENTION ANY OTHER WORK ON THE SITE SINCE 1965 ? HAS ANY MORE GOLD BEEN FOUND SINCE ?

As far as I can remember, there was nothing mentioned any other work done or gold found. I was splitting my attention between the program and the forum. ;D

a book i recently re-read mentions it.... 1001 lost buried and sunken treasures, by F.L. Coffman, the book may be hard to find, but it is a good book to have ;)

Pat.

If you go on history channel's website and type in digging the truth. Then go to episode archive. I hope this helps.
