Fun to speculate perhaps the buried coins are not connected Lafitte but some plantation family fortune looted in the American civil war?

Another thing to add when New Orleans was captured General Benjamin Franklin Butler of Union army so it has been claimed turned a blind eye to looting of civilian property. This alleged recovery of treasure could possibly connected to the occupying Union army? The Devils Hole appear to be about 290 miles from the sea and in Lafayettes time New Orleans was clearing house of illicit stolen, smuggled or captured goods from piracy?

I should also point out this story may be a classic example on how newspapers putting a spin on a story by adding Lafayette to the story. That remains we have no idea of who allegedly buried this treasure. It could also be from Lafayette's time however Lafayette was not only person engaged in piracy and smuggling in that era? So its all to easy to assume such alleged treasure belong to someone without a shred of evidence to support that.
