Found this at a civil war era house site, anybody know what it is? Its very heavy brass or bronze and may have had gold gilt on it I am going to clean up more. Looks like Lady Liberty with stars around her. I thought it was an old bike bell but i think its to heavy to have made any sound. Looks like it was screwed on to something.

Its not a button. its about the size of a door knob but is very heavy. I dont think it could ring any sound as solid as it is but who knows. I though maybe a cook stove nob?
I have looked and looked online and have no clue. Reid
Ok a new pic with a quarter for size, its to big to be a drawer pull.
Someone suggested a cain top, that might be an idea.

Nice find!

Compared to the quarter, its bigger than a silver dollar.........hmmmm maybe your onto something with the whole doorbell thing.
Unique find anyway.....good job!! 8)

No idea what it is..but is sure does look old..

kinda reminds me of a bicycle bell, i think your initial though was right.

awesome! No idea who that is on the front of the button though. Stil pretty awesome button! :)

My guess would be old door-knob. I've seen 'em before at old abandoned houses.

Where did you find that info?

Dig until your arm falls off

Reid - that looks like it could have come from the token site we hunted. Or did you just dig that recently? I can't tell how tall your find is from the pic, but it looks to be a bit flatter than one of those bicycle bells. From the back side it looks similar to many of those leather adornment pieces I seem to find on colonial sites. I don't believe its nearly that old (maybe turn-of-the century), but my best guess is that it's a decorative piece that was attached to leather such as on a horse saddle. If you measure the height of it please post it. Also, the type of site where it was found could also help to ID it. Cool find!

inch to inch and a half tall found it by river in oil city pa

I'm with those voting that it is the dome cover from a bell. Interesting subject matter for a bell though which would make you think that it was older.
