Ladies & Gentleman...PAYDIRT !!!! My Oldest Coin Yet !!!

Ok - Ok ...I was supposed to work today but it got all screwed up by someones dumba$$ mistake and deleting my phone number :dontknow: :angry4:

Anyway by 3:30 pm I knew I was'nt working SOOOO I decided to utilize a beautiful day and head on back to the Mohawk indian castle and give it a go :tongue3:

Sun just a shining :sunny: and not a cloud in the sky ! I started gridding the whole field from the end I hav'nt done yet.
takes about 30 minutes to walk end to end and I moved further north and covered about 3 trips and had several musketballs , a few pieces of lead and 2 brass points.

I moved over a few feet and started a new lane and worked towards tire ruts left in the field from mid-winter logging and picked up on a so-so target..VDI around 72 - 78.
I was not expecting what I was about to dig up but it made my day !!!

My third cob I've ever found in the Mohawk valley !!!

Potosí Philip IV (1625-1665) cob

Obverse: [PHI]LIPV]S IIII [D.G.] HIS[PANIARUM]
Reverse: [ET IN]DIARVM REX [ANN]O [----]

Weight: 418.0 g (27.09 grams)

I checked out Spanish cobs in the colonial coin web site and this is the closet match...Please any of you who know cobbs I'm listening !

The dates of this cob do match the time frame this site was visited and attacked ( 1630's - 1660's )

Last photo is of a bullet still inside wood I found in the woods.

I did read there was a 1618 Dutch coin found at this site back in the 20's during digs
I'd thrilled to have found this cob...GOTTA BE MORE !!!

HH & Great finds !!!

Derek

Maybe it gets better, but it's good enough already!

Re: Ladies & Gentleman...PAYDIRT !!!! My Oldest Coin Yet !!!

Great find Derek, there has been discussion going on lately about lack of cobs in the northern states and to find your 3rd one is above the norm for up north. Congrats on a very nice oldie.

Derek that is one great find you have. What kind of program do you run at this site? I have the DFX and I am pretty new to it and I am trying to learn some new programs instead of running the Coin/Jewerly program all the time. Is the Relic program good to use?

G'mornin Master Sarge ...

I am strictly a colonial hunter therefore I run my own program and only a few changes to settings...accept +95 /-30 or less and digg everything but null targets , dig iron that may have a high side depending on the site.
This particular site has a very low amout of trash ( farmers and hunters tossed foil and 22's and pulltabs ) so I dig 99%
I like tone ID on and tweak up the sens. a bit.

Thats about it...my goal for colonial relics and being away from modern trash saves time digging up junk

I'm VERY happy with the DFX...it performs like a champ !

Good luck and future success !! :occasion14:

Re: Ladies & Gentleman...PAYDIRT !!!! My Oldest Coin Yet !!!

Thank you all for the good words and replies !!

The cob find was the LAST thing I expected...it sure did'nt present itself as a coin hiding in the deep dirt..I was expecting another musketball of chunk of lead ! I do half hope there might be a Mass. tree type shilling stashed in the dirt at the site. Its possible considering the time period.

Fingers crossed !

After I dug it and had a good look at it I did a super silly moon walk chicken scratch type dance :laughing1: :laughing3: :laughing9: Thank GOD no one saw me ! :tongue3:

HH !
