I found this last week in the Northern Illinois woods about 200-yards from a river.
The area that it was found has been used for at least the past 110-years because coins
have been found that are at least that old.

My first thought was this might have been some type of file but it's not flat on either side as a
file would be. . . it's beveled on each side, like a knife, and the "tang" seems much longer
than those of any files I've seen.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. . . thanks!

I'd say knife blade with long handled tang that was formerly covered by a wooden handle at one time (the woods long gone) most likely .

I think this find could be older than the coin era finds. Based River lcation could this be a spear point from very early explorers or Native Indian?

My first notion was a file, but I am now thinking old knife 'cause the handle is too long. Monty

Would this be a good object to place in an electrolysis cleaner bath made with a cell phone charger?

well it can be hard to id such. The taper seems even so I also need to throw in a possibility of a reamer, or scraper.

Yet I would most likely go with a knife. The idea of electrolysis is good for such.

Looks like a knife I found in a fur trade area. Copper handle.

If I were a betting Woman  I'd say file. Looks just like a few from the garage (minus the rusty crusty). What do you think?

Thanks everyone for all the good comments. . . after all that has been said, I'm thinking file would be
the most logical given the circumstances of where it was found and the degree of corrosion present.

Thanks again everyone!
