King Juan Carlos' visit to Pensacola today
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia of Spain are in Pensacola today and just wrapped up their address to the public. It was a pretty awesome event for our community and the King showed quite a bit of appreciation for Pensacola's enthusiasm for our Spanish heritage. I was pretty impressed that he spoke English so well.
The King and Queen arrived at the Pensacola Naval Air Station late last night aboard their Spanish Air Force Airbus. This morning they visited the many sites around Pensacola where Spanish historic sites have been preserved, in addition to the former british Fort George site where the Spanish victory of 1781 was assured. They also laid a wreath at the commemorative bust of General Don Bernardo de Galvez who led Spanish forces to victory during the
same battle.
Details of the visit can be found at http://www.pnj.com
Of course, for some strange reason I couldn't get him to relinquish all of his country's claims to lost treasure on our coasts, but hey I tried .
