Yesterday I found a King George II coin in Coventry Rhode Island, previous to this the oldest coin I Found was a 1916 Mercury dime which I found last weekend along with three other Mercury dimes all in the same hole. The King George coin was found at a completely different location.
It's hard to make out the date right now so I have it soaking in mineral oil to hopefully loosen any existing dirt. I can make out the first 17 but can't make out the last two digits yet..
I'm using an AT Pro With the 5 x 8 coil.. I have had the metal detector for a about two months now and probably have been metal detecting for 60 hours since I've owned it.. It gets much easier after you get used to the machine.. this thing is light years away from the old bounty Hunter I bought about 15 years ago..
I was really excited when I found in 1916 Mercury dime since it beat my friends Old coin date by four years.. ( It would have been nice if it was a D minted 1916 )
I have gotten tons of clad coins but not too much old stuff yet..
So far I've gotten six Mercury dimes.. The King George coin.. And I'm also adding a button and some other piece of jewelry I guess that's what it is I'm not quite sure what it is.. That was found at the same location and about 4 feet away from the King George coin at the same depth of about 6 inches.. By the way I've enclosed a comparison picture Of a King George going for reference.
I have been able to make out the word George and II REX On the coin, the back is a little easier to see than the front.. Hopefully after soaking in the mineral oil for some time it will be a little better defined. I really want to be able to read the full date
A friend and I have a competition for finding the oldest coin for the year... I think I'm going to win this even though the season has just started..
