Machin Mills were back dated, I see some dated 1771 in the C4 Nov 2007 auction catalog. However, the coin in question if it is of Regal weight is a legitmate KGIII colonial, which I have not see any found in our area out of over a hundred that were identifiable. A regal KGIII if ground found is in the minority for finding in America. Counterfeits are in the mid to high 90% range for KGIII coppers.

On this website I am including, compare your 1772 with the Regal one and see if you see any differences.

If this is a counterfeit, which you imply. Then its the best one I have seen so far. Best weigh it to find out, as it looks like the 1-10 real ones. IMHO.

Actually I am saying it looks like a Regal which is almost never found as a ground found in America. But without the weight listed cannot be 100% sure.

EXCELLENT FIND! Can you post the weight?

At that weight, no doubt, appearance and weight confirm, it is a Regal KGIII, is this a ground found or a buy or cigar box find? I have no recent record of a Regal KGIII being found in the states, again, the vast majority of KGIII's are counterfeits, although it is the counterfeits that hold the collectors interest here and not the Regals. :)

Hey Don... is this a banner find??

From what I read it's a significant coin!

It is not a significant find, KGIII Halfpennies are common, just that they were not distributed in America. Worth is less than most counterfeits, since most of them somewhat have a personality of their own.

I just find it interesting that so few have been found by detectorists, although I am sure most who have found KGIII coppers think one of two things. I got a regular KGIII Halfpenny or I must have a Machins Mills Halfpenny. Well, almost all of the time it will be a counterfeit of some type and not a Machins Mills, nor a Regal Halfpenny, which are not found too often.
