well went to a park today that I have been to when I have my old garrett gtx. I thought it was cleaned out but good old dfx found it. I had pre amp 4 accepting everything and sweepspeed at 2. My first dig was a no date buffalo. Then I dug a ring that looked as though it was a cheapo class ring it seems to be copper. It says highschool around the stone but no exact school. Then while I was digging my next target I was swarmed with 10 to 12 year olds. They followed my every move asking me every question in the book. I showed them the detector and how on most stuff I could tell what the item was going to be before I dug it up. A couple of quarters later they believed me. They were annoying me so much by trying to dig the holes and standing directly in front of me so it was difficult to swing the detector. Finally had to go to work. Anyway in a hour pulled $1.37 clad the buffalo the ring a small silver earring and a silver linked braclet broking in 3 pieces. Anyone else have the kid problem when detecting ? and know a polite way to say get the heck out of here.

Look at it this way! it happens, and it has happened to everyone in this forum.....Just pull out a hand full of pull tabs and they will go away! lolol Not really!!!.............. Like all Kids....They are curious, interested, and will always want to see what people are doing! Good Luck in your next outing! ;D

the only way i deal with it is to go early in the morning. it not only works for kids but for most adults that act like idiots as well! that early in the morning it seems that the kids and stupid adults are still sleeping. most folks up that early are pretty nice.

Dang kids. LOL Actually waht i reccomend is wearing earphones, it really does help. Also, after they have been following you for 5 or 10 min say your gonna take a brake, sit down for 5 to 10 min and they will go back to playing on the playground. Usually they will loose interest after that. Another idea is to tell them to walk around and use there eyes to find coins, they will actually walk around looking themselves. Works everytime...

Yeah, I know what you mean! I was at this mall trying to do my laps and all these pesky shoppers kept getting in the way. So I can really relate. Lifes a tough gig sometimes...
Just messin' witcha ;), I experienced the same thing about a month ago and could not shake the kids. I had my eight year old with me but the kids looked a little rough and a couple of years older. I just ended up letting them dig targets and fill in holes and gave them all the clad I found. They seemed extremely happy with their 20 or 30 cents a piece, maybe it planted seeds for future detectorists.

horrid gas.........if you have any......can scare just about anyone away......or act deaf, no, no that won't work.....cause head phones....sometimes when a vagrant starts bothering me.....I speak in tongues, or fake german or russian....and act like I don't speak english.......that really is fun and it disturbs people...I laugh inside when I get the weird looks....

I always take the opportunity to introduce them to the hobby then tell them to go and ask their parents if they will buy them a detector. In a flash their gone especially after digging a few finds in front of them.

overall not a lot of time with the children. usually try to get to the park at daylight. 2-3 hours and i am done. thats about when the 1st folks show up. wish i would have seen someone with a detector when i was young. please be nice to the children. dont want any detectorphobes banning us from the parks.

If kids keep bugging me:

I usually say, I can't hear too well with these headphones on.

I tell them to go play, i'll tell them if I find something good i'll let you know.

If it continues and there parents are around I usually give there parents a look like, get this kid away from me.

If that doesn't work I turn off my detector and sit down.

If they still bug me, I light up a cigarette and blow smoke at them. :P

I always try to encourage the kids, you never know which one will pick up the bug! Besides, it's better that the attention you get be from the kids rather than the park attendents who tell you you can't dig here, lol!

OHHH...be nice to the kids. :) You may just teach them somethin good. ;)

And congrats on your finds.

I ran into this yesterday.
I told them, stand aside and watch. They were so excited, but I talked to them about the things I have found, and the items I was digging up.

It was great educating them and seeing them so excited, so I hinted around to them about what to ask for on their next birthday or Christmas.

I bet one out of five will eventually be a member of this forum.

I've learned to be patient with the children. I don't mind the little ones asking questions it's the loud, obnoxious teenagers that act smart and talk a lot of nonsense that I just want to take my detector and hit them in the head. LOL No not really, maybe just scream back at them but I just ignore it. One day I'm sure one of those smart a$$ kids is going to push my buttons and I'm going to go off like a firework on July 4th,with a big bang!

To quote W.C. Fields:

"Of course I like children...........provided they're cooked properly!" ;D ;D ;D

I honestly like it when kids come over to me and show an interest. I let them go right along with me and put markers on the spots and let them dig. Think about it, it's great PR. They are going to tell their parents what a great time they had and who knows? Like Treasurekidd said, it takes some of the condesending looks off of us! AND like Nana said, "Be nice to the kids!"

OOOOOH! So I see Willy Wonka isn't the only one using little oompa loompas for cheap labor! Who would have thought it? Do you pay them in cocoa beans as well? ;D Thrillathahuntr has a Metal Detecting Sweatshop! ;D ;D ;D

I've come to not mind kids hanging around.
It's the parents I have trouble with.
They don't seem to like where I hang their kids.
Congrats on the finds!! HH

Since i am 17. I have kids following me around all the time. When i am detecting parks. Especially at boy scout camp they followed me around a lot. I just let them follow me until they get bored. I try not to talk to much cuz i dont know a lot of the answers to the questions. BUt i am friendly, they usually say sweet a metal detector and watch me then get bored. I get really annoyed though. It happens all the time you just have to get used to it.
