Located a key near a waterway. It was about 8" underground. Was wondering if anyone could shed some light as to what it may have opened at one time. Thanks

Good condition for its age.

Thank you. Was the last thing I thought I'd find.

Knowing the size would help with the ID. It looks to be pretty much like a standard skeleton key. These were common for using on doors within the home.

Excellent. I will measure it when I get home and repost. Thank you

Good info and thanks for the site. The key is 3 5/8" long 1/4" thick and appears to be made of brass.

Agreed.....mortise lock......possibly a gate lock. Looks like it's missing some of the bit on the end.

Probably from the 1870s-1890s, That was when they were most popular. It probably opened a front door, shed, or gate. Nice find.
