Looks like it maybe from a cast iron "Dutch Oven" Looks old but are still made today. That sure would get th e old heart a pumping when uncovering the top and not knowing that it does'nt cover a pot of double eagles.

Just read the date on the gold coins in the pot that was under the lid! Seriously though it looks like 1700s to me I always find pieces myself and wonder how they always get so broken up.

I've always wondered that too. :icon_scratch: I think the question has been asked before on this forum, but nobody had a clue. :-\

I dig stuff like that and I KNOW it was deposited between 1866 and maybe through the mid 1960s. Old iron trash...

That is indeed a lid to a Dutch Oven. Can you read any large numbers on it?Can you see any design, like a Phoenix bird?I also find those, and they are always broken,I have figured they couldnt handle the constant direct heat,or during the night they absorbed moisture hen when put in the fire the exploded!!I do not think it is 1700's,but I do commonly find them in 1850's sites. Here is the Phoenix Stove works emblem, which is quite rare, and I thought I had several pics of complete ones I have dug but I dont know where they are,I can go take photos of them if you wish
