I belong to a metal detecting forum that's on face book, most of its just to show what they have found and trying to fined a value on it . I read a post that a lady from England put on there about how terrible she thought it was for people to be doing metal detecting for the money that can be made, she said she had been detecting for 25 years and still had everything she ever found . I have been in the hobby on and off over the years, and I still have some of my fined and sold some, she was pretty anger that people are doing it for profit, and that metal detecting started years ago as a hobby..I look at it as a hobby, but I don't see anything wrong in making some money at it either ....any body have any thoughts on that...

Nobody's business what one does w/ what they find. I keep what I find for now...may sell silver someday, no worries for those who make $$$

It's yours to do with what you want. I personally sell most of my jewelry to further my hobby. American history relic items on the other hand I keep and cherish. If I find a coin worth $100, 000, you better believe I'm going to sell it. I got bills to pay.

If I was MD'ing or just exploring and found something of great value I'd sell it in a MINUTE if it greatly improved my standard of living. I wouldn't even hesitate or have a second thought about it. My only though would be how. Especially if it was a large find such as the folks in CA. who found the gold coins on THEIR OWN PROPERTY!!!! But even if it was a 1/4 or less of that I'd sell and keep quiet. But that's just my thoughts.

Some people talk as if sold finds are destroyed. Not sure why someone would care what anyone does with the stuff they dig.

I keep stuff I like...I put some away for my daughter to have when I pass....and I sell the crap out of everything else..many times it is the money that helps me out and it doesnt mess with my love of the hunt.It amplifies it.

The first time you hand a loved one a chunk of cash you detected you will understand...nothing wrong with that.

I started off thinking I would sell what I could.
But with my addictive nature I now collect everything lol

I now have a button collection, a coin collection, a bullet collection, a buckle collection, a pendant collection.....you get my drift.

I can't see a problem in selling stuff, if you want to sell and someone wants to buy, everyone's happy.

She probably just sucks, and has never found anything worth selling.

I didn't want to, but had a car down payment to make. Just sold off all my gold. It wasn't a ton, but at least my check didn't bounce. Sounds like people stick their nose into detectorists business from both sides of the hobby!

When I got back into this, I did so with the understanding that I'd be selling the jewelry...

...and here we are, without a single piece of jewelry sold. :) I actually did the opposite and spent even more money to buy a case for my rings. Now I'm telling myself that I'm waiting for gold to go back up before I sell, but I'm not fooling myself any more. I'll likely never sell those rings, not even the ones worth good money. They're worth more to me as rings that I found.

The clad will be cashed in at the end of the year. No sentimental value there at all. But the relics, jewelry, and toys (even fairly minor), I just can't seem to part with.

Me and my Dad did a lot of metal detecting back in the 80,s and back then there was still a lot of silver to be found and we both found are share, I sold all that I had years ago, and was talking with my Dad the other day and he still has all the stuff he found back then , he just had the need to sale any of it and didn't even know for sure where it was in the house. Hey everybody does there thing and the world goes on....but I thing if I ever found a nice piece of jewelry I would keep it or the wife would grab it up....By the way Dave Rishar...what do you think of the XP Deus?

By the way Dave Rishar...what do you think of the XP Deus?

I'm extremely pleased with it. I could probably write a few pages on why, but I don't want to derail this thread. Shoot me a PM if you want me to go into details or catch me on the Deus subforum here.

battleaxe.jpg...She gives new meaning to the phrase, Old Battle Axe.

Anybody interested in a rusty collection of oxen and horseshoes? Since I'm a woodworker I'll even make a nice case for them. Let the bidding begin. Ok... start now... anytime folks.... crickets...????

she said she had been detecting for 25 years and still had everything she ever found . ....any body have any thoughts on that...

Tell her there are treatment programs for hoarders like her. It's sick and unhealthy to refuse to let go of things.

I like to keep most of what I find. However if its damaged, degraded or just uninteresting I've sold it off for a few bucks. That's just the way it is. I've used my finds in the gold fields and parks of Australia to keep myself fed and fueled as I prospected there. By those standards I guess I would be a bad detectorist but I tell ya those nuggets were hard to sell. And finding a few hundred dollars in coin, I love those kanga's and abo coins, they become a challenge to find but otherwise uninteresting to keep.
My thought anymore is to keep a few memento's from the detect and pass on the rest to the economy~ or whoevers interested in what I have to offer. I've always got the memories.

Is it right to make some money from your hobby. Well, let me compare.
I do paintings for my self, but I also sell paintings.
I take pictures for my self and also sell images.
Now how does that differ from detecting? I conserve some finds for myself and others, but I sell finds in which I have no interest. I have probably found thousands of coins, but I probably have saved less than two dozen that have special meaning to me.

Just a note: It is illegal to keep some finds in England!

If I found a new diamond necklace, I would sell it. If I found an old Spanish gold coin I would keep it.

So far I haven't found either one. But I have kept all the old stuff I've found.

I have sold a few scrap gold rings over the years. Funny thing is, when I do sell, I buy more detecting equipment!?
Also, historic finds in the U.S. are not regulated and don't have to be reported to any government agency. We simply don't have the history as Europe.
If Native American objects start popping outta the ground, that's another matter.!
Peace

To each his own as to how the finds are handled...trash bucket, copper bucket for recycle, Coin Star, or give as a gift to a family member or a friend...

As an example, I happen to have a Civil War "CS Brass Buckle" that encountered a farmers plow, and lost that battle too...

And it's a total disaster...its all intact, its just chopped up and is a twisted lump...

My kids are not interested in historic items...

So when my family settle my estate in future years, they will most likely look at this buckle and give it a toss....

Probably won't make garage sale status either...

So yeah, I'll sell this relic just so another person can enjoy touching and displaying a bit of history...
