Just trying to figure this out. Looks like a dragon or fish design. Guessing it was a furniture escutcheon or something?

It is part of a musket side plate. Cool find. With luck maybe you can go back and find the rest of it. Stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

Makers varied.
The N.W. Trade gun your sideplate was used on is a type that followed/evolved from English fowlers. Maybe around 1775 they were started being traded here. There are references to them being traded on the North side of Lake Superior 1777-80.
[The primary sourced of the Indian trade gun was factories in Birmingham and London, England.]
