I have not posted anything that I have found since last fall because where I hunt is underwater right now but when I come to the forum to see what others have posted all I see is things that don't belong in this forum. Only a very few people have posted any artifacts. I know there is a learning point for everyone but when do you say enough with the rocks? :BangHead:

Under Water? One of my best spots is under water and I am in the south.

then only read posts from folks you know. Larson, I have learned a lot from you. I think we all learn from each other. I have found very few points, but lots of flakes. encouragement from you folks keeps me going out to hunt, & I know some day I will find something good & will probably have to ask what it is. should I be afraid to ask?

Amen southern girl. It is something I never thought about, but maybe you and I just have a gift. I wonder sometimes what their display areas at home must look like.

Mother nature forms billions of rocks into different shapes, millions of which look like shapes that tease our imaginations but in the end they are still just rocks....

I agree.I had a friend that thought , just that it fit the hand or had a shape it was a artifact. So untrue.

oh come on! I have no difficulty identifying something like these....so why post them? All the "rocks" I post were found where I found these (among a host of others) I am not skipping down the beach picking up pretty stones and going "ooooh...ahhhh, looky here" While I may be a newbie on this forum I have hunted on 3 continents for over 4 decades. I learned a long time ago to pick it up NOW and ask questions LATER.

It's rather embarassing when you post with ''real'' actual artifacts, and recieve only two or three responses. And when there is a post on an ''Just A Rock'', there are a dozen or more responses glamorizing and comparing. :icon_scratch:

I totally agree that this is a wonderful place to ask and answer questions. I too ask for input and advice.when I first started on this forum I ..more than once was the Guy with an attitude. But I also belive that there is alot of learning that can be done by observing others posts and their artifacts that should allow people to make their own deductions and weed out the stones. I like helping alot it is rewarding to me but when one person continues posting rocks it seems their should be more self evaluation happening.

I truly believe it helps to understand if you know the type of rock it took to make an artifact work for the Indians. I like rocks as to which one would of been used and for what purpose. The hard to the soft of stones. Once a person understands the difference it really helps in knowing which would even be considered as a life support tool. For all of you new hunters getting into the hobby this is for you. I check the hardness of the stone when I find something that looks like a artifact (unless its drilled). You can put it between your fingers and if it breaks its not going to be a point or scraper. If it is still hard look for flaking along the edges (secondary flaking). If it shows then you have something. Look for this along the top and bottom, if nothing shows as to tooling its just a rock. As for the softer items look for drill marks or pottery items are soft as well. Usually very thin and shows a mix of pieces in it like shell or mica. Good luck and Happy Hunting

I remember when many people on here posted rocks and geofacts along with artifacts. I have seen many people come and go cause of hurt feelings or because the material in their area was not up to par with other members. I say post it and use this site as a learning tool. Let the chips fall where they may but when everyone says "Rock" let it go. Put it in the big pile in the garden out back we all have.

word.

I have had people give me stuff for years. Ninety percent of the time they were rocks. Beautiful strange rocks. A few times they were not. I have a six inch blade that could have been done by any of the high-end modern knappers. A work of art. The old man who gave it to me said "I am still not sure it is not just a rock, but keep it." He was eighty-eight when he gave it to me and that was thirty years ago. His daddy had found it in Kentucky doing road work in the twenties. I said to him it was worth serious money - even then, much less now - and he said "I don't need any money where I am going." I have six pieces he gave me that are world-class artifacts. They were in a box of rocks.

So you never know. And I will get pictures of some of my stuff here one of these days. I am pretty much an iPad addict now and it isn't quite a desktop :) I love cool rocks sometimes as much as I love these tools. But the tools have been touched by man, and it is that that provides the magic I feel. And I am sure a lot of you feel.

Who cares if someone posts a pic of something they found that is not an artifact. People are looking for help and we should take the time to help them.

If it is a rock, the majority will let you know, if it is a artifact the same will hold true.........Post them anyway!!! I love it when i take a newbie out to a field and they constantly bring me something and I just toss it shattering there hope on a legit artifact. I know this sounds mean but it is how I started off and learned. The day they actually find one is more rewarding then all the tossed stones they found!!!! They learn quick on what stones to bring me and what to leave alone after that.............I know it is still mean but the comments after I launch them is priceless!!!!...............................GTP(Chris)
