From Ridgecrest CA, ever run into Jim Straight out there?

I've only been here for a few months but I've ran into a lot of prospectors and detectorists since I've been here. I met an older man name Jim but I don't think he told me his last name.

Far as I know, Jim is still out there hunting for gold, probably more often since his wife died. I forgot, it was I believe Rialto CA but his profile says 98 miles S of Randsburg....all out in the same general area. Ridgecrest is where I had an assay done once by mail.

Is he an older guy about maybe 5 foot 8 or so kind of chubby and wears glasses? That's what the Jim I met looked like.

That's his avatar pic, looks like it must be Jim (hard to tell with all the gear) now 85 years until the B-Day next month.

Yeah, Jim is a great guy, if you get to know him. Just to show you, these are the extra copies from Jim sent me them free even paying the postage. When a person writes articles for a magazine, generally they send a courtesy copy to the author. In the 2nd pic at bottom is a note Jim wrote inside cover of a book I got from him back in the mid 1990s.

I didn't know he was the same guy from the articles. I've read a lot of his articles.

Small world, isn't it.....hopefully he will live a few more years, my dad is 84 years about same age as Jim.

Yeah it is. It's not the first time I've ran into someone without realizing who they were. I even ran into the Kardashians once and I had no idea who they were or why they had cameras following them around then one day I saw them on tv.

After buying my first gold detector a GB-2, went to AZ at Quartzsite, then down to Yuma at the Laguna placers. A car drove up, a guy got out ran a gold detector a little while. Finally he came over and started talking to me, said, "I teach nugget hunting and was looking for a student who is living out of his car". Turns out it was someone connected to the 49ers prospecting club in CA. After getting back home, about my next issue of a treasure hunting magazine, noticed he was in the Fisher GB-2 ad on the page.

Lol it happens more than people realize.
