Sorry about the spelling error! JUST GETTING STARTED, I am also intrested in the Minelab Explorer 2. So basically its between the DFX or the Explorer 2. Any suggestions would help. Thanks Again

I tried out the DFX at a civil war show and loved it...I settled for the Prizm V though because I didn't have enough money for the Dfx. I do love the Prizm though. Either way, welcome and good luck with whatever you buy and prepare to become addicted to this site, I am. There are a lot of good friendly people on here. Watch out for Pete though, he is funny as hel-...
Pepperpump ?;D

Hello and welcome to the forum. I am also fairly new to Md'ing and I am biased towards my machine. I bought a Whites MXT as my first detector and got a pretty good deal from Kellyco ( sales person Laura) If you really want to spend $1000, I would spend ALOT of time researching and test driving as many machines as possible. When I bought my MXT I also had about a $1000 to spend so I bought the MXT and a 5" excellerator coil and accessories (digging tool, pouch, sand scoop, etc...). All the little extras add up. As for the MXT, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It was easy to learn, easy to use, and it definitely produces for me. The learning curve wasn't nearly as steep as a DFX and I think it's an excellent 1st machine for someone who has the money and is serious about making detecting a lifelong hobby. And that's what it becomes, LIFELONG! Because after the first few finds, you're hooked for life! Sorry about the long winded post but I always get excited to explain things to someone new like myself. Ask lots of questions, do your homework, Post lots of pics. Good luck and Happy hunting!

I can't help you out about the Minelab except I believe they're made in Australia. Not 100 % sure but I think I read that in a previous post somewhere. The DFX on the other hand is made in the good old U.S. of A.
If you'll be looking for coins, jewelry, relics only buy the DFX. If you'll be wanting to do some prospecting in gold country get the MXT.
With the DFX you won't be needing to upgrade for a very long time.
If it's possible buy from a local dealer. If there's one near you ask if you can try some different ones out. Get a good set of metal detecting headphones. And if you can a smaller than stock coil does wonders in trashy areas.
I'm sure you'll hear from Minelab owners. I've heard they are great detectors. Maybe a little heavier than Whites. All I've ever used was Whites so I'm a little biased that way. :)
