A weight used on a net to catch gold and mercury rolling down a creek about 150-200 years ago?

Scott

PS.
I've recovered fishing weights, buckshot and even mercury in my pannings.....

WOW!

SO MANY GREAT HUNCHES. A FEW WERE VERY CLOSE. BUT WITHOUT THE HISTORY THAT GOES WITH IT, IT'S JUST A CHUNK OF LEAD. THE ONLY REAL VALUE LIES IN KNOWING THE HISTORY.
I'LL TRY TO SHORTEN IT IF I CAN. ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO, A FRIEND AND I WERE TRACKING
A STORY OF ONE OF THOSE SILVER MINES THAT SO MANY OF US DREAM OF. THIS STORY HAD A LIVING LINK THAT LIVED IN SOUTHERN MADISON COUNTY ARKANSAS. WE WENT TO SEE HIM. HE WAS IN HIS LATE EIGHTIES BACK THEN, AND HE TOLD US ABOUT BEING A KID, LIVING ON THE SAME FARM HIS WHOLE LIFE. BORN IN A SHACK THAT STILL STANDS BEHIND HIS PRESENT HOME.
AS THE YOUNGEST OF THREE BROTHERS HE GREW UP POOR, BUT HE HAD FOUND A PEICE OF ORE THAT HE WAS SURE WAS SILVER (AS A KID). HIS BROTHERS TEASED HIM AND CALLED HIM A FOOL OVER THE ROCK THAT HE DESCRIBED TO BE A CHUNK OF GALINA. HE SNAPPED AND THREW IT AS FAR AS HE COULD, NEVER TO BE FOUND AGAIN. HOWEVER, WHILE SEARCHING FOR HIS SILVER MINE, HE AND HIS BROTHERS FOUND A SMALL OUTCROP OF SOFT LEAD. FOR YEARS THEY WOULD GO TO THAT OUTCROP WITH THEIR KNIVES AN HATCHETS TO SLICE OFF QUARTER SIZE THIN SLICES THAT HE SAID WOULD CURL OFF AND THEY WOULD COMPRESS THE DIAMETER SO THAT THEY COULD USE THEM TO TIE TO THEIR FISHING LINES, AS A HOME MADE FISHING WEIGHT.
SOME EIGHTY SOMETHING YEARS LATER, ABOUT FIVE MILES DOWN STREAM, IT CAME OUT OF A BEDROCK CRACK AND INTO MY GOLD PAN.

WITHOUT THIS SMALL PEICE OF HISTORY, THAT ARTIFAC, WOULD HAVE BEEN TOSSED AWAY WITHOUT ANOTHER THOUGHT.

TIREDIRON YOU CAME THE CLOSEST BY THE SIMPLEST ANSWER. GREAT JOB.

SOME TIME IT'S JUST ABOUT THE HISTORY.

I HOPE YOU ALL HAD FUN TRYING.

DIG ALL TARGETS AND SEE WHAT IS IN THE BOTTOM OF YOU PAN.

Grrr...I was first to look at this when you posted it (was watching live posts) and instantly thought "fishing weight"...but disgarded it due to the "it has a unique story"!
Thought it was going to turn out to be an apache earring or something! :laughing9:

DANO,

I WISHED THAT HAD YOU POSTED THAT. I ALSO LIKED THE EARING THEORY. IT MIGHT HAVE
STARTED A BUNCH OF FOLKS DOWN THAT ROAD. HAD I NOT KNOWN WHEN I PULLED IT FROM MY GOLD PAN HAVING BEEN TOLD THE STORY BY THE OLD MAN, I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD ANY IDEA AT ALL.
I GUESS THAT'S THE TRUE REASON THAT I PUT IT ON. I WISH THE OLDMAN WAS STILL ALIVE,
SO I COULD TELL HIM THAT I FOUND ONE, AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS. HISTORY IS A GREAT SUBJECT TO STUDY. I WISH I WOULD HAVE PAYED BETTER ATTENTION TO IT IN SCHOOL.

BUT THEY SAY "IT'S THE EARLY BIRD THAT GETS THE WORM." HOWEVER; IT'S THE SECOND MOUSE THAT GETS THE CHEESE!

DANO, I HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY TODAY, AND I HOPE YOU TRIP OVER A PEICE OF HISTORY AS WELL, AND KNOW WHAT IT IS.

KUGAR,

YOU PUT IT IN A NUTSHELL.
THAT WAS THE POINT OF ALL THAT I POSTED. OUR ELDERS ARE OUR HISTORY, JUST AS THEIR ELDERS WERE THEIR HISTORY.
THE INDIANS (OUR NATIVE AMERICANS) TRUELY UNDERSTOOD THE VALUE OF LISTENING
TO THEIR ELDERS.

THANKS FOR THE POST.
