Minelab X-Terra 705,
Garret Pro Pointer
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
So, I ended up getting the Minelab X-Terra 705 and a Garret Pro Pinpointer for my very first pieces of equipment. I must say, I couldn't be happier.

And what's the first thing I found...I'm sure half, if not all of you can guess....

A pull tab :P

Now, I knew from the start it was a pull tab. I had watched enough video's seen the numbers come up on other people's X-Terra. I recognized it. But I also knew, from reading and watching video's that pull tabs and gold rings read pretty much the same. And on top of that it was in my own back yard. But...what drove me to dig it is...my brother lost his white gold class ring in my backyard. And this was showing about 2 inches underground my my X-Terra. So...I dug it.

Was I disappointed. Maybe a little that I didn't find the ring itself, but I was unbelievable happy that I found a pull tab. Not because it was some major find, I know I'll end up later hating a find like this, but it was my FIRST find. No one else would have found that, it was buried in the ground. It was me and my X-Terra that found it. I was proud that I had detected it, proud that I had pinpointed it, proud to have dug it and proud that I was able to identify the numbers.

So that was my first find. Lame perhaps...but mine none the less!

Later I went down to the creek next to my house, where we do a lot of target shooting. I wanted to see what I could do in an area I knew was littered with shell casings. I did pretty good. I learned the numbers and the sounds of a .22 shell casing. And of my larger 7.62x54r casing. Nothing of worthy mention though. Come this weekend however, I'm going to my neighbor's house to where they had an old smoke shed from the time of the slaves. This smoke shed, according to her, was used to hide slaves when they were escaping. So I'm hoping for maybe something. But we were forced to tear the smoke house down several years ago because it was starting to fall down and was becoming a danger with snakes taking to it and just the general dangers of a collapsing building.

So I'm expecting nails at the very least. And maybe, just maybe...an old coin or some other lost relic.

Wish me luck!

Streak welcome to Tnet
Try the creek a little more away from where you shoot, creeks were to highways of the the early people might be a good spot.

Absolutely! I would have last night but it was already dark. I was having to use a flash light as is. So I decided to call it for then. But this weekend I think I will take that advice and do a little hunting in the creek!

Hi streak, GREAT story. My first find was a foil cap cover.....Still brought it home...1st. find ya know:thumbsup:

Your enthusiasm is admirable and as long as you maintain it, you will really enjoy this hobby. After all, it is a... HOBBY. The Xterra 705 is a great machine and very versatile. Can't wait to hear about your first old coin, silver, or gold jewelry find. GL and HH.

Welcome to the addiction. I'd hit your back yard a bit more too. That ring has to be there somewhere as long as you haven't relandscaped it recently.

Just keep swinging - Big Gold! :occasion14:

No one mentioned to you about: "slave tags"? They are valuable to collectors. I never found one, but have found tokens, etc. you can clean out all the nails first, then go slow and listen for the deep whispers. HH Boris use headphones and watch out for rain.

Excellent machine, you are going to love it

Hi Streak,

You made an excellent choice of machines. I really believe in getting a quality machine even if you are a newbie. You're going to love it. I understand how you feel about your first find. Mine was a brass grommet. My Whites said it was either a nickel or a ring. To me a brass grommet was right in the middle! I attached it to my favorite metal detecting hat and it has been there ever since. Keep experimenting and you will get to know your machine. You have a bright future ahead of you. (Pun intended) HH
