I have been finding some Chert in the raw state. It is even good looking just as it comes out of the ground. I believe the Tan one is Coastal Plains, The gray one is regular and the red is just plain crazy looking. If You know the names of them please post it . I think I have a new favorite red rock now.. All were found in NW Georgia just laying in the dirt. Thanks, rock

I don't know if you really want to hear from me or not.... but... you live on the coastal plain..(Georgia) coastal plains chert get its name from the geographical location of the outcrop. It comes in many different colors depending on the minerals present in the area when it was formed. it also comes in many different grades depending on the amount of silica and the size and density of the crystallization. If What you have is chert its almost certainly all coastal plains chert. I have it in blue and white..white.. tan..cream.. and several other shades including high quality translucent.

I belive its better to always post examples..so here are a few.

ForumRunner_20121202_185643.png p.s. " regular" isn't a type.. :-) in N.W. Georgia there are sub types of coastal plains chert like..ridge..valley... it's still coastal plains formation chert.

That looks Like it could be Jasper which is really just chert that gets its color from Iron. Although it doesn't appear to have the smooth fracture quality that it should for that type of siliconized stone.

Your wording in this post implied that the photos you provided we're of pieces you actually found. Is that the case?
