I have not gotten to do much detecting. Today is the first day we have gotten any rain since February. So I have been doing hunting of another kind: Job hunting.

My wife and I are both teachers, so you would think it would be easy, right?

WRONG.

We are applying to several different states. We need to find a school where we both can teach, or at least some that are close. As it is, we have one interview for a school nearly 300 miles away in the Oklahoma panhandle. Still...a job is a job, and hopefully we get it.

I plan on doing some hunting this week, since it rained.

Good luck! On the jobs and on getting out to hunt! How far are you from Mount Scott, Fort Sill? - Terry

I live about 20 miles north of Fort Sill. Got off of active duty here.

Went to Field Artillery school at Ft. Sill, back in the 70s. I really wish you the best of luck in finding a job. Look for old fair and rodeo grounds to detect out there. The librarys(sp) have great old maps - God Bless, and thank you for your service to our country! Terry 1/41 FA 1973-1976

I started out Artillery (well, it was a crazy trip, but eventually I ended up as a 13B) but then went medic, then lab tech. I have been studying a good bit about this area. Read Carbine and Lance, and have a friend that works for Fort Sill doing historical restoration...so one day I may talk him into letting me hunt for that cannon filled with gold. I live pretty close to the Keechi hills where the James boys hid their stuff too.

State budgets are getting slaughtered everywhere.

Here in Florida, we don't have an income tax, just a sales and property tax.

Well, folks aren't buying like they used to and property values here have been falling like a stone since 2008.

The State is now scrambling for cash and everybody is facing some serious cutbacks, even schools.

Man, I hope you two can find something.

At issue here is that we have a governor who believes she can run the state like a private fiefdom, and a majority legislature who is too terrified to vote outside of party lines. If the state was in such dire budgetary restraint, she had no business giving millions of dollars in rebates and tax "incentives" to the oil and natural gas companies, or the largest agribusinesses in the state...who also happened to be the largest contributors to her campaign. I guess it pays to donate, as long as you donate big enough.

This is like the lottery/casino shell game. They say that the lotto and the casinos provide money for schools. This is true. All they do is reduce the amount of money for general education from the state general fund dollar for dollar for the gambling money. This goes into the education fund. When they need to "cut" something, they are essentially stealing back money that they already stole once. It is a damned crime.

Ahh, the gold filled cannon.. wouldn't that be a dream!? I put together a list of gold and treasure stories on my website every week, and posted this a few weeks back. Thought you might like this news story:

http://www.oudaily.com/news/2011/mar/31/ou-history-collections-attract-treasure-seekers-re/

"One of the top five collections of western American and American Indian history attracts treasure hunters and researchers to OU’s old law library in Monnet Hall. The Western History Collections are a special wing of the OU library system, OU Special Collections Director John Lovett said. The collections consist primarily of rare books, photographs, maps, sound recordings and manuscripts relating to the American west and American Indian history. Fortune hunters have been known to come to the Western History Collections looking for information about lost treasures, Lovett said."

Cheers! Terry

Educations budgets are getting cut across Pennsylvania. My missus is taking her retirement and walking after 32 years in June.

I am leaving the military due to disability, and leaving medicine because I simply cannot do it on the civilian side. Too many blood sucking insurance companies. I like to work in medicine, not spend all day arguing with pencil pushers over patient care.

I need to start my teaching career, but thanks to the moronic NCLB, everyone wants student teaching experience. The alternative certification does not require it. It is a loop hole. Also, here in Oklahoma, the nepotism goes so deep it is unbelievable. My wife got passed over for two jobs in favor of someone's daughter in law, and the son of a friend, in that order.

I am trying to get into teaching, and it kills me to see so many good people leaving the profession. I know teachers have been getting attacked by politicians in both budgets and in benefits.....

Libralabsoldier, you have spoken directly to my heart. For those not from Oklahoma, he is dead on about the governor and nepotism. I will add that the 'good old boy' network is very much alive and well in the state employment sector. You want a state job? I have seen folks make campaign contributions and then get that job. Enough of that, I'm outta there and it's not my problem. I hope you find a pretty good job. There's just not a hell of a lot goin on there in Apache, unless you want to commute to Lawton. I have noticed more small businesses shuttin down in sw OK everytime I go down there. I hope you find somethin that lets you stay in that area too, cause SW OK is treasure central. According to the stories, anyway. Take care, HH!

Actually, the interview we have on Thursday is up in the panhandle. We cannot continue to live on 25K a year when we both have college loans and we have a mortgage on a house we bought that is now probably worth half what I paid for it. I am right in the middle of some pretty rich treasure hunting area, but I really have not had the time. Too busy beating the bricks and working every angle I know to try and get a job.

I don't know about other states but Texas has the Soldiers to Teachers act. It allows you to become a teacher and convert all your military time to retirement.

Hogman, almost every state has the Troops to Teachers program. In reality, it is working against me. Since I start out with five years experience for pay purposes, but no real experience on paper...they use it as an excuse not to hire.

Well, things will work out, they always do, and you guys will come up with somethin. Is there anythin worth workin at down at the refuge?

The park rangers will get after you, is about it. I never even thought of bringing a detector out there. To update, my wife and I have THREE interviews tomorrow, and another on May 7th.

hahaha! I know all about detectors on the refuge but didn't learn the hard way. I meant like jobs. Keep us posted, as I'm sure you'll get some good news pretty soon.
