I went out yesterday and did a Geo. survey by site for the DEQ of Ms. of a local creek. I was just checking where a layer of Miocene clay was exposed an looking for plant matter and fossils. What I did find was a place on top of the Miocene clay that had layers Ocher Red, yellow, and purplish blue color. This goes along with readings I have found that paint pigments came from my area. I will go back and get some samples. I found 1 pottery sherd and a layer of lignite coal, which to me was cool, but there has to be more in this creek as artifacts go.

On a sadder note my artifact mentor passed away Wednesday and we said good bye today. His family wants to give me his collection which is a great honor to me. I already have one of his best points that he gave to me on a loan and his family said just keep it. He always wanted to donate some of his items to the state so I'm torn on how to handle his items. The family did not have much money so I gave them the money for his head stone because he gave me so much knowledge. He will be missed.:sad7:

Interesting observation concerning the site. My condolences for your loss as well.

Sorry for your loss ....it's good he got to pass along his knowledge to you and it will continue to be passed as you have shared a lot of it on this forum.

My condolences as well. Just a thought but maybe you should hold on to his stuff ,but let it be known you want it donated to the state museum when you pass.Whenever you look at it or share it with others will be a reminder of your friend.

Mighty sorry about your friend, Rack.

Condolences for you and the family. Hopefully you will share the knowledge you have gained with an unsuspecting first timer who wants to learn and will pass that knowledge on as well.

Sorry to hear about your mentor. Perhaps a way to approach the collection could be to pick the pieces you think he would have donated, donate them to the appropriate institutions. Keep the pieces which are the most beautiful/unique/sentimental for yourself and other friends. Raffle the others and give the family the money...they may be able use it. A bit of info on each piece and part of the collection gets distributed to other interested collectors, sharing the knowledge. Just an idea.

Sorry to read of your loss and the loss to his family. Paying for his headstone is a testament to your love for him and the friendship y'all had. Donate a few and keep the rest if you think that's what he would of wanted...d2

Sorry for loss. Prayers sent for you and his family

sorry to hear that buddy, a loss of a mentor is a lonely thing. Only you and he really understood the relationship, it transcends friendship. As for his collection...the state already has too much stuff and his stuff will not be honored as it should...however a very small town local museum located where the bulk of his finds were found sure would....in his name too.

Sorry for your loss. Unclemac has a good idea. A small local museam would give that collection much more respect than the state ever would. There is a great small local museam in Murphy, NC that has a large NA collection donated from local residents. They do a great job on display and recognition of the natives and the current owners.
