Junk silver purchases

Only had time to hit one dealer today before they closed, so I went to the guy who sells for spot price when he has stuff in.

The pickings were scarce from what he had on display, but he pulled some stuff from the back for me to go through. Normally he says he doesn't have much or anything to sell, but whenever I want to buy a hundred or couple hundred dollars worth of stuff he is able to round it up from the back no problem, so I can't complain. ;)

He pulled out a roll of dimes from the back that he said he bought from a regular who normally brings in BU stuff and sometimes throw a merc or two in his rolls. I bought it for $44 and it turned out to have 1 - 80% canadian, 6 - Mercs and the rest silver roosevelts. All the coins are in really nice shape, not all perfect but still, can't complain.

I also bought $30 face value of 40% halves, which I normally wouldn't buy, but pickings are scarce and I head out of state in like two days for months, for $1.60 a pop, which I believe was the apmex buy price or something.

I noticed some really nice looking Peace and Morgans and asked what they would let them go for. I was told like $18 for one, and 16ish for the other two. I had bought 5 farely crappy Peace's the week before from a different guy at $14 a piece, so the prices I was quoted weren't that bad. I told him I didn't have any Morgans in my collection yet, so he picked out 3 REALLY nice looking 1921's and after I picked out the roll of dimes and the halves, he ended up letting the 3 morgans go for only $14 a pop.

So I managed to add a bit more to the silver stash and got some REALLY beautiful morgans.

I'm happy :P

Dont worry Dave, your investment will eventually pay off handsomely. I would be careful though of too many of the old silver dollars. At least here there seems to be a huge buy/sell spread. But in any event, if silver goes up you will come out ahead.

Just have to keep rubbing it in huh? "Sells for spot", haha. Glad yous have so many choices. I think my local is warming up though, if I wanted to give up the silver hunt and plopped down a few K I could maybe get a decent deal on gold or all his generic silver- just not ready to give up the hunt. I'm still on the fence about retiring the hunt and buying cheap silver or plugging along getting what FV I can as silver goes up. Right now I am doing both but if I buy more bullion I will have to lower my box orders. Decisions, decisions. HH Mark

Not saying it to rub it in... saying it to give ya'll HOPE! =)

If I was looking to buy a few thousand at a time though, I wouldn't be able to round it all up at the prices I have been paying him, AND he is the ONLY guy around that will sell for near spot, so I just slowly chip away at what he has.

I wouldn't give the hunt for a good dealer/deal... it is a fun game. You learn a lot and meet some really nice people through it as well.

Hope you find some goodies soon.

Bought some more stuff today and I even paid ABOVE spot which is unusual for me. ;)

I posted this in jim's purchases forum in CRH but figured I would hit it up here too:

Went to one of my boy's shops today who normally doesn't have good priced stuff just to see if he got anything in lately (which hasn't been the case for the past couple weeks). I had just cleaned my other dealer out of the 90% he was willing to part with for me and I had another couple hundred bucks to blow before I leave for college tomorrow.

He always has silver out, but the prices are crazy. He had 1oz rounds and banged up morgans and peace dollars for $19.95 for like the last MONTH (one of the MANY dealers who refused to sell stuff he bought high for lower than what he paid). He only just lowered the prices yesterday down to $14.95 a pop on both of the trays, and he only sells them to regulars and only so many at a time so he isn't cleaned out.

I dove into the 1oz tray to see if I could dig anything up. I recently had to sell most of my silver cause I REALLY needed the cash, but am now buying all back (it worked out well as I sold at $17 an oz. and am now buying it back much cheaper ;) ).

I ended up getting 1 - 1oz Sunshine bar, 1 - 1oz Prospector, his last Maple (unc shape), his last two normal eagles (decent shape), and his last 4 "painted" eagles (all 2000's and in GREAT shape).

I think I got a decent deal paying 14.95 for the maple and the eagles (even the painted dress ones - which when sold from the mint sold for a NICE premium but now aren't that hot ;P) and I grabbed one prospector and one sunshine because I didn't have either of them in my collection yet.

So the stash of silver is no where near fully recovered yet, but certainly on its way, and it looks A LOT nicer this time around, since last time it consisted like 99% of junk silver, and this time around I have a wide selection of 90% junk but also some nice .999/9 stuff.

Sounds like you got a good deal for sure, under 15 bucks for maples and eagles is great. I passed on an offer for a book filled with all the silver eagles up to 2008 for 16 bucks per coin (they wanted $48 for the 1996). I wonder if I should have taken it now, in that I could have had one of each year plus the Dansco book thrown in for free.

Jim

16 bucks per coin with the 1996 missing? So they were selling the 1996 seperately for 40+? or was the 16 per coin average even WITH the 1996, which would have been a really nice deal.

When was that offered to you? What was spot at the time? Right now it seems like that would be a good buy with current spot and premiums and all that. A nice little collection to have for sure. =)

I was offered this two days ago. The coins were all 16 a piece except the 96, which he wanted 48 bucks for. I bought a bunch of libertads and some engelhards and JMs that day from him and I did not want to fork out anymore dough. But later I thought it might be cool to have a collection of all the regular issue ASEs for that price plus the nice Dansco album thrown in. I may try and call him tomorrow and see if he still has it. They go thru inventory real fast so I imagine it is gone.

If you've got the extra cash, I would look into it. $16 an eagle, depending on condition ain't too bad considering some of the premiums dealers slap on them and that ebay sellers do, etc.

Its a little pricey in my opinion, but silver will only go up long term, so to get such a nice collection for a somewhat decent price now when price is low is a smart move. I wouldn't buy a bag of eagles for that price a piece, but for a SET in an album I would definately at least think about it... and I am a STICKLER when it comes to what I pay for silver... I HATE to pay anything over spot. ;)
