I went hunting along a creek in a known Civil War area looking for camp sites or anything else of note and found a bunch of iron doohickey's in the middle of the woods, in a concentrated area, near no known structures. In all directions around the spot no hits on anything. There were a lot of these similar parts, but these are the most unique, hopefully making them more identifiable.

Item #1: The gear looking object looks like it has one square bolt.

Item #2: I have no idea, possibly a cap of some kind. It has four thumb screws around the perimeter, that are not iron.

Are these an indication of some kind of CW artillery spot, or someone's out of the way dumping spot? Thanks!

That gear is made to clamp on an output shaft. Probably for an electric motor? Maybe a PTO? Those cogs also appear to be for a roller chain instead of meshing with another gear. Just a few more thoughts. Was the area ever logged?

I was wondering why the gears were at such sharp angles, that makes more sense being mated with a chain. As far as being logged there are large swaths of farm land in every direction.

The top piece is a worn sprocket for a square link chain, the bolt is a set screw to hold it to a shaft. Common for many pieces of machinery.

Not sure about square link as opposed to roller. This is a real common size and shape for a roller chain used on a lime or manure spreader. If square box more likely a conveyer on a chopper box.
The other part looks like a bowl from an old carburetor or fuel pump.

Dig all that stuff out of the way and get down to business, McD.

Best wishes and happy new year!--------Phil
