Hello. This morning I hunted the local school in my little town. Its a old mountain town that never got very big.. So when I detect I never know what I will find. I was hunting in a spot that I found a late 1800's drink token and was digging pull tabs and trash. I like to dig anything foil and up "get it out of the way" is my thinking. I got a very shallow nickel-tab signal. The pinpointed said it was on the surfice. I literally pulled the coin city my fingers 1/4" deep. It was a 1896 V nickel. KIMG0101.jpg

Congrats, and welcome to the club! Hopefully, this is just the first of many. Good luck in the new year.

Welcome to the club! Congrats.

Digging all repeatable signals pays off, if you can handle it.

Congrats on entering the 1800's. :occasion14: Which detector were you swinging today?

The vaquero. I am figuring it out.. The language was like Chinese at first.. But I am getting the vaquero down.. I just dug a 1919 penny with it around 8" maby deeper didn't measure just used my digging tool as a ruler. I cleaned the nickel.. I know many say not to but I don't care I like to see a clean coin in my display.KIMG0105.jpgKIMG0106.jpg

Congrats on the first 1800's find. My first was two 1883 Indians stacked on top of each other. The inner protected area of the coins were in almost uncirculated condition leading me to believe that they were lost in that year.

Congratualtions on the v-nickel and welcome to the 1800 club! :occasion14:

How did you clean your nickel? I've got several that I've found and they are really red also. But, I'm like you, I would like them to look nicer in my display. I'm not planning on selling them.

I use what is called " bar keepers friend". Its not for silver! But cleans Penny's and nickels very well. I am not patient... I soak the coin for 30 mins or so, then rub with my thumb rinse with water and soak another 30 mins or so them rub with my thumb. Repeat... Repeat.. It will take a many " rub downs" but try it.. I have cleaned some very nasty nickels with it and all came out looking very good.. I have seen no I'll effect to the coin from the cleaner.

As you rub the coin you will see the red black... $h!t come off it.. After 2-3 times you will start to see the silver color coming thru. It just makes you do it more. :)

Congrats!, always exciting to get into a different century!

Welcome to the 1800s Kaiser! It's a THRILL to know that coins that old are just sitting around, waiting for us to come and find them. To basically pick one out of the grass is a testament to the saying..."anything can be anywhere". And it is!
Congratulations,keep at it!

Nice find and welcome to the club!! As Crusader posted, clean out the area......you'll never have to dig it again!! Makes a re-grids so much easier.
I need to know.......how did you clean that V nickel??
