John F. Boylan "Excelsior" button

Found this button in a private yard to an early 1800's house....the back mark says John F. Boylan, S.N.Y., NY the front along the bottom says "Excelsior" I did a search and the John Boylan company made buttons from 1864 thru 1880...but couldn;t find anything else about this one...any ideas? military? also anyone know what the S. before N.Y. on the back means? Thanks!!

Re: John F. Boylan "Excelsior" button

"SNY" stands for State of New York. There are c. 1840-65 New York Militia oval "SNY" belt plates.
