Found this today at an old mill. Any ideas? Obviously homemade jewelry of some sort. Is there a way to tell if it's silver? I wouldn't see any reason why someone would punch a hole in it to wear around their neck or wrist unless it wasn't some kind of precious metal. It came out of the ground that shiny color. All I did was hit it with a spray bottle of water. Nothing more. It isn't lead. It's not heavy enough and I unsuccessfully tried to bend it.

Spit on it and rub with foil, if it smells of eggs it's silver :icon_thumleft:

Really ??? ??? ???
I've never heard of this. I'm going to feel really stupid doing this.

Well, either this is an old wives tale or this is platinum because it doesn't smell like eggs.

Any pawn shop can tell you. Or maybe try silver polish and try it on a known silver item and compare the black on the rag. It may be aluminum.

No, it works well, lets off a sulphur smell. The chemical reaction should also cause some heat. So, if you tried it, & nothing happened, its NOT Silver.

You only get that reaction from Silver when the Silver is Black :icon_thumleft:

I understand. Silver Sulfide is what forms...should get a similar smell when using baking soda to polish silver. So if it isn't silver any guesses as to what it might be? Could I be lucky enough for another precious metal? Like I said, it isn't lead. I can't bend it.
