I am headed to the Jersey shore this weekend. Staying at the Tropicana. This is my first summer of metal detecting and have had loads of fun in my new home town of Myrtle beach! Any advise? Places, times etc. Any one going to be out this weekend? I am bringing my F250 on the plane. Any one have any advise or issues with bringing a metal detector on a plane?

First of all, bringing a metal detector is no problem as a carry-on. Just make sure you take the batteries and your digger out and put them as check-in. TSA has issues about knives , even the scoop.
When I go to AC I usually stay at Bally's, which is further up the beach, anyway, expect to find alot- and I mean alot!!!! of pennies. You know the routine, throw a penny in the ocean win mega bucks. The shore line also has black sand in places which causes havoc. The dry sand is basically dredged sand with alot of reeds and shells, bring a strong scoop because it's rough digging in the dry sand, if you find a target over 4" deep, you'll work up a sweat to dig the hole.
I usually hit the beach in the early AM while the big boss is sleeping. You'll also see some people sacked out on the beach. The local homeless people usually ask some questions. Like, find anything, how much for the detector- I was thinking of buying one.( swear to God, a homeless man who had mismatched shoes asked me that) .
Anyway, have fun and you WILL find coins, I noticed by the old wooden piers I found quite a few quarters. GOOD LUCK and HH DON

Yea allot of the homeless people will hang out at the fast food places with free fixing bars and load up on lettuce and tomato's, its really pretty sad. AC attracts people that are down and the casino's lower their status to out!! Sa La vi !!

Thanks Don!
I just printed the list of approved carry=ons and metal detectors are not on the list and are specifically mentioned as not approved to carry on. For some pennies and a few quarters I'm not sure it is worth it.
I will think about it, working up a sweat doesn't bother me but fending off the homeless is not my idea of a relaxing mini-vacation.
Anybody else out there? Is it worth it?

AC does have a lot of old coins washing up. I go down a couple times a year and stay at the Showboat. I have found lots of wheat pennies, a couple buffalo nickels and many silver coins. Mercury dimes, washington quarters and even a Franklin half. The old coins are whipped but still cool to find old booty on the beach. Plus you always have the chance to find some jewelry. If you have a car you can drive south to Ventnor or even Ocean City. North is a great place Brigentine Island. If you go about 30 minutes north is long beach island. Just Surf City is still off limits for the bombs that have been dug on the beach. I am headed to AC today and I am taking my detector along. So if that helps you decide if it is worth it or not.
