Dad brought these back from the battlefield in New Guinea during WW2. He assumed they were Japanese but I cannot find this type of star in my reference material. they are about the size of a nickle..any idea, hat badge, collar insignia?....rank? no idea...the stars i have seen do not have this sort of back and have a smooth front..any help appreciated.

I don't know. It certainly appears (screams :occasion18:) Japanese to me, from the design.

looks like a high ranking Japanese officers hat pin star from his wool crusher hat ......later on in the war the stars got "plain" as trhe war drug on ,,,,, this one is "fancy" so liikely made early in the war and for a higher ranking office

the screw down design is so the peg goes thru a hole and then the nut in the back secures it in place

the shoulder board type rank stars had two bendible tabs to secure them

enlisted men's cloth caps had a cloth star patch sewed on it
