Iwo Jima Memorial Closed, Barricades Erected (Update: Vets Break Through)

Daniel Halper

Another open-air memorial in the Washington area is closed and barricaded off: the Iwo Jima Memorial, just across the bridge from D.C. in Rosslyn, Virginia. A source sends along this picture of the barricade set-up at the memorial, which is also called the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial:

“I took the picture yesterday afternoon. Those barricades had been there at least a day. People can still walk into the Memorial area, but for many elderly and disabled vets, it is important they be driven and park right next to the statue,” the person who took this picture emails.

“There has been no coverage of Iwo Jima being closed and it is a routine stop for Honor Flight visitors.”

The source adds: ”This picture is from North Marshall Drive (100 yards up the hill from the 110) facing the only road in and out of the Memorial for cars. There are parking spots for cars and buses right next the Memorial that can only be accessed via this road. Interestingly too, the view you see is also the last 200 yards of the Marine Corps Marathon which is in three weeks. That would be 20,000 pissed off runners who have trained for months.”

The stop is a popular destination for veterans and tourists alike, and, in my observation, is usually completely unmanned and unguarded. But, for some reason, it’s closed to the public during this federal government shutdown.

UPDATE: I’m told, “The Syracuse Honor Flight just knocked down the barrier and a couple hundred of them are at the Memorial now.”

Here’s a picture:

I only wish I could assist in knocking down a barrier to show unity with our vets. I had heard they were silencing the baseball and football broadcasts to our military overseas as well but today I heard they were going to continue programs that dealt with the morale of our military. I'm hoping that includes these broadcasts. We need to replace 90% of these pompous a-holes and look for a few patriots to replace them. I'm so ashamed of our government at this time and it's going to take a lot of changes to eliminate those feelings. I have to wonder if it isn't all a diversionary tactic much like those used by pickpockets. They get you focusing on one thing as another picks your pocket. Thing is, in this case they don't take your wallet, they take your rights away. I'm beginning to think like those that I used to consider radical.

from the TampaBayTimes by way of the New York Times, "Federal budget crisis planned months ahead". Shortly after President Barack Obama started his second term, a loose knit coalition of conservative activists led by former Attorney General Edwin Meese III gathered in the capital to plot strategy. Their push to repeal Obama's health law was going NOWHERE (caps added by me), and they desperately needed a new plan.......................................Although the laws opponents say that shutting down the government was not their objective, the activists anticipated a shutdown could occur.....and worked wth members of the tea party caucus in Congress who were excited about drawing a red line against a law they despise.

The entire article can be accessed on the TampaBayTimes website. It is on page 2 of the first section 10/6/2013.

You can thank me later.:occasion14:

As the newly rechristened Tampa Bay Times, the paper's weekday tabloid tbt*, a free daily publication trending progressive liberal and which used "(* Tampa Bay Times)" as its subtitle, became just tbt when the name change took place.[5] The St. Pete Times name was repurposed as a new name for the Times' neighborhood news sections in southern Pinellas County (formerly Neighborhood Times), serving communities from Largo southward.

Thanks for posting this liberal rag Dave....

is the New York Times a "liberal rag" Deep? Is Forbes Magazine a "liberal rag"? Is everything except Infowars considered to be a "liberal rag" now a days?

Please do read the article as posted in the NYT.

Answer to both is yes, both the New York Times and Forbes Magazine are Liberal.....NYT has always been liberal left leaning, Forbes use to be more right leaning, a sort of "bastion of free market capitalism" but since taking over True/Slant and giving its founder Lewis Dvorkinit a position at Forbes and he brought some of his left-wing staff and contributors it now has a strong liberal lean which is why I no longer buy it or read it...
