It's that time of year again. Beware.

When i got home from yard sales yesterday I checked my sales and my paypal account. Just a normal checkup. On paypal there was a $1.00 pending charge from HOME SHOPPING NETWORK. I see things like that all the time. I go to a restaurant and they ping my card to see if it is good and then later they send through the full amount. No big deal.

Well I have never even watched HSN. I do admit i like their comedy shows. You know, when they sell their "very rare and precious" coins. I stop few a few minutes to get a good laugh. But, this ping was done at 8:30 in the AM. I was on the road. I immediatly changed my password and thought that was it. If someone had gotten my number they now do not have a password anymore.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

At 6:14 last night I got hit with a $109.90 charge from HSN. I noticed it just about 3-4 minutes before paypal closes for the night. I called and the guy instantly voided my card and put in an order for a new one. (7-10 days) and said my money would be back in my account in a few minutes. It was, every penny.

Now they have to go after HSN and pull their money back and HSN has to go after the thief. i wonder what he/she bought with my card?

If you have seen the PayPal adds lately, they are the safest there is. Guess that's not the case is it

I got hit last year. A week before Christmas some crook walked into a 7eleven about 50 miles away from my house with my ATM card and withdrew $300 from the machine in there. My ATM card was still in my wallet. I don't know how they clone them, but apparently it's way too easy. After my bank checked the security tapes to make sure it wasn't me that withdrew the money, they put the money back in my account 3 days later. This type of crime is so prevalent that it's not even reported by the banks most of the time. The theft losses are all spread out among the banks customers in various fees, so we all end up paying for it. Watch your bank accounts very closely.

BoA called us a few weeks ago. Someone was going nuts buying stuff at DunkinDonuts.com They voided our cards. BUT, the idiots also paid their Cox Cable bill. Bwahaha. How stupid can you be? (We don't live in Rhode Island; never even been there. That is where the thieves live.)

this is surprisingly easy to do. all it takes is a card reader from your local staples and a bit of programming knowledge, and i can clone cards all day long. not that i would do it mind you, but its not real difficult either.

now cox has their exact address, bet they do nothing.

I think the ads show paypal is safest for the card owner. Got my $109 back in lass than 15 minutes.

Few more months and everybody's cards will have those RFID chips in them, that will end the cloners..for awhile anyway. Our merchant services just sent us new terminals for them kinds of cards. They have had those cards in europe and have for quite some time with great success, not sure why its taking so long to adopt it here in the states.

Unlike the US, Europe is not owned and operated by banks.

Hmm never thought about that. So its not in the banks best interest to save money by reducing fraud ? I'm confused.

Mike

no, it's not in the banks best interests. they just pass the cost on to the consumer by way of fees.

If you're account goes overdrawn due to fraud you will be dunned for overdraft fees and if there are enough of them, say good bye checking account/savings account.

by the time you get it sorted out. It's not like they, the banks, have a big stash of cash sitting around to pay pay pal or anyone, it's all electonic money.

Replacing every credit card in the US with a chip on card version is expensive. It's cheaper, in the short run (which is all that counts when you're trying to make the quarterly earnings number) to play whack a mole.

It's expensive to bury power lines, so my power goes out for days every winter. It's cheaper, in the short run, to just repair them.

It's expensive to run fiber, so we have slower broadband than most countries. It's cheaper, in the short run, to just pretend.

No one should ever make the mistake of thinking corporations are operated for your good. They are created solely to make a profit. And when we decided they were people and their money was speech, we played God.

Used my card for some medicine over the phone medicine was in new York and I got billed for three months for a boat vacation out of florida for 350$ till I called my card co. and then I called the bad people who was using it and threatened to sue and turn over to FBI and finally it stopped and I changed my card for a new one. shortribs

Two years ago someone in New York paid a cell phone bill with my money. This was cleared up rather quickly and I got all of my money back. I changed accounts, passwords.........
