It's never really "hunted out"...

Had some time to take advantage of the "warmer" weather so I hit a park close to home; one I've pounded for the last 2 years or so. Everytime I think I've gotten all I can get out of this one, I get a surprise :) Funny thing is, I got the iffy signal and dug down pretty deep... no target, just a lot of iron around. I thought what I originally heard was some falsing so I filled the hole in. For the heck of it, I rechecked it and there it was again; actually sounded pretty good. I pinpointed about 1" away from where I originally dug. Dug down around the same depth and found another Merc. Sure glad I decided to re-dig :)

Nice Merc Joe,
Sure looks like she has seen her days.
Way to not give up.

Nice find and good story! Not only do I believe the adage that many places that are supposedly "hunted out" can still produce finds, but your persistence on a signal identified another good credo to follow.

As far as places never being fully "hunted out." I suppose it can happen, but when you combine new detectors with ever changing ground conditions (freezing and thawing, moisture levels, erosion, etc...) - I think the truly hunted out areas are fewer than most people think.

Keep at it!

Nice find Joe, the spot I'm at now, I've hit side to side, top to bottom, diagonal and I still find stuff every time I go there. Luckily the site is bigger than a football field and I'm amazed how many times I hit it, it still puts out.

Nice looking merc. I like em worn like that, the old ones that is. It truely is "never hunted out." Just have to be persistant I guess. Also, those never hunted out sites take perseverance. You have to be willing to dig the iffy ones, the deep iffy ones. Those have been good to me sometimes, the iffy ones. Most of the easy ones are gone. But there are some beauties out there. You just found one. Nice coin.

...You sure got that right, Joe. That's been my motto all year now. I've been going back repeatedly to my turf sites, and wondering if they're ever going to go dry....I went back to a park today that I've pounded earlier in the year, and got 5 silver dimes and 15 wheaties today.

Congrats on the silver!!

It's funny, the particular area I found the merc I also found an 1876 seated quarter (last December). So, you can imagine how many times I've gone over and gridded this area out since then :) 12.5", stock 10.5", 8", Platypus. Every variation of a setting possible :) Must have hit this puppy at just the right angle and bingo. Almost fooled me though for all the iron around... the x-1 was nulling out in IM-10 so I went to all metal. Thought I could hear something good in there but wasn't sure. When I scanned it again with the stock 10.5", there was no doubt in my mind I had something good. Must have been sitting on edge between a lot of junk :) It was near where I thought the x-1 was picking something up. What a great machine. :)

Nice work Joe! A merc makes the day!

You bet! Especially when you go someplace you know like the back of your hand just to kill some time... not expecting to find clad let alone a Merc... and an '18 at that :)
