IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

Why is it that we dig so many pennies? It is just a penny, right? What else could it be a coper pipe? Not much other than a penny right? I can understand digging them in an older area for wheat's. Is anywhere else a waste of time or what?

Keep @ it HH!!

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

I find myself Ignoreing Some of the Louder ZINC CENT signals, When an Area is Loaded with them.

Especially when It sounds like 50 of um spread over a 2 square foot area.

HOWEVER, Evey once in awhile I'll think it's a ZINC CENT & I'll pull out an Early Indian Head Cent.

Sinse You can't REALLY go by Depth. (Different areas the Coins are at Different Depths)

IF your Ignoreing all Zinc Cents your Gonna Be Ignoreing Early Indian Head Cents ;D

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

The following items can masquerade as a penny signal (at least on MY detector):

half cent
Bronze Indian Cent
Two-Cent Piece
Silver Half Dime
Silver Three-Cent
Bust Dime
Twenty-Cent Piece
Gold $10.00
Gold $20.00

misc. foreign coins

misc. tokens

oblong souvenir penny/flattened pennies

small silver jewelry
large gold ring (including large gold class or high school rings)

civil war bullet

and other items that dont readily come to mind

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

Pennies are just fine by me! I've dug just under $4 worth of them so far, and I don't mind them a bit. Sometimes, my ACE250 will read copper pennies as DIME-PENNY, which I believe happens if the coin is on edge or at an angle because of the size similarity between dimes and pennies and because of the dimes copper core??. Zinc pennies ring up true at PENNY, but I dig them all up. Hey, it's better than digging all those nickel tones that turn out to be can slaw or pulltabs, right? Money is money, and I'll take a pile of pennies any day!!

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

My Whites Prism II reads dimes as pennies, there isnt an icon for dimes. But if I didnt dig all pennies my total coin count would be a heck of alot lower. I do tend to disc out zinc pennies though.

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

I think Missouri Jim is right on. Too many other goodies read as pennies to ignore them. And there is always the chance of nearby metal objects throwing off the VDI. But if I don't have much time I dig less of the shallow penny signals.

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

yah swat - i have read on other forums - people will pass them up - not on here though - i agree - with the others - i dig them every time - and for the record in OHIO it is lead poisoning prevention month - no kidding this time - in regards to the old houses with lead paint - so kudos - swat - now go dig some copper ..................... ::)LBP

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

i dig them too mud. i just dont trust the target id that much and like jeff said, i dont want to miss an indian head......or a wheat for that matter.

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

If I am finding lots coins of the silver colord ilk, quarters and dimes, I sometimes discriminate out the pennies. I did find a gold ring disguised as a penny though. Sooner rather than later I go back and dig the pennies, especially if I have had a couple of nonproductive outings. It rekindles the spirit so to speak! JIM

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

Hey Mud, I posted this pic under TODAYS FINDS, but thought it appropriate here too. This morning finds, 1Q, 4D, 3N, and 25 PENNIES, lol! They seemed to be everywhere this morning!

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

i just discriminate out iron and dig anything as long as its a repeatable solid tone.
my penny jar is gettin heavy, bt if i didn't dig all those penny i wouldhave missd alot of great items

Re: IT'S JUST A PENNY!!

I personally think people discrim themselves out of a lot of good finds, I tend to find myself Cherry picking with the XLT and then I remember that I don't care that much about clad and return to digging just about everything anyway. I should just use my Pi and not give myself the option. At least a penny is something, I will take them over nails and wire anyday.
