It's Gold, But What Is It?

I found this down about 4" along the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia harbour at low tide. It is heavy for it's size and is not attracted to a magnet. Any ideas? thinking maybe a tie clip or cufflink? The hole in the centre could have held a gem in it? Thanks for looking.

Don't know about a tie clip or a cuff link as there are no markings/remnants of where a post would have been affixed on the back (unless it was glued?). What type of signal did you get on your detector? It definitely looks like it could have had a gem in the center at some point. Have you had it tested for what percentage of gold?

Cool piece regardless - keep us posted...

I guess the 'roughed up' (lines) was to give it grip when glued or soldered. Probably had a cut glass insert. Have to say, I'm not convinced it looks gold.

I agree it's an inset piece.

A very simple way to tell if somehting is real gold is to put some foundation and face powder on the back of your hand and then rub the gold against it. If a black mark is left behind it is real gold. Real gold creates a chemical reaction with most makeup that fake gold will not. I tried this method and it left a black mark. I then tested other metals I had and they did not leave marks. Coupled with the non-magnet attraction, I'm assuming it has a gold content. I'll try to get it tested at a jewellry store this week and give the verdict....deal?,or no deal? :tongue3:

I've never heard of this, but I always keep an open mind. The only thing that bothers me about it being gold is the pitting on the surface of it--gold doesn't corrode or react with the environment. Let us know what you find out.

Excellent point and one I've never thought of...maybe I'm a fool and this isn't gold...hmmm foolsgold comes to mind as a new nickname. ;D Will get it checked this week.
