My blackberries started out as a wild patch that I let get out of control. I decided to try and keep them but manage them and get some berries off of them. I ran my bush hog through the patch and left 3’ wide rows of canes. The mower cut a 5’ path between rows. The next summer the patch didn’t produce because I didn’t understand the life cycle of blackberries. Since I didn’t get berries I went ahead and bush hogged it again in mid summer. New canes started growing immediately and were tall by fall. The next summer I got berries. I then figured out berries grow on previous yrs canes. Once canes produce they are done and have to be removed.
So now I’ll bush hog after berries are finished and fertilize with nitrogen to encourage new canes for next summers berries. I’ve picked over a gallon in last 4 days. I’ll freeze them and take the entire crop to the local winery and get a bottle of blackberry wine in return.

Beautiful! We have acres of wild black raspberries. The dry weather devastated them this year. Very few berries. What we got were smaller and 2 weeks late. Congrats. That wine sounds excellent. Enjoy

Great harvest
I planted and did not get any yet
