Metal Detecting
Well, I'm 79 now, and have some new problems with things like balance, and bad knees, but I still manage to drag out the AT Pro for a look now and then.
I got to the beach at a local lake today, and found a bit of modern change, and some lead sinkers.
The sinkers got me wondering - they read close to what gold would, should I ever be that lucky. If I wanted to practice on what a small gold coin would sound like, could I make a blank by hammering out one of these big split shot to the size and thickness of a dime?
I know the AT Pro is not a gold detector per se, but it finds lead pea sized sinkers down to 6" in wet sand. I live in the heart of '49er gold country. I doubt there are many lost double eagles, but the drunken miners may have lost some of the smaller coins, maybe even in my back yard...:coffee2:

I've yet to find my first gold coin but I'm looking diligently in all the right places to find one this year. I just read somewhere on this site the other day, that all U.S. gold coins, except the tiny $1 gold coins, register as pull tabs on most or all metal detectors. When I find my first one, I'll try to remember to let you know. :)

I think this is a common mistake lots of new or inexperienced detectorist make. They believe, sometimes, because of sales pitches that they can go out & dig gold & silver without having to dig lots of trash. There is no short cuts. I have a saying, that its not Treasure Hunting, it's Trash Digging. Once you realise that, & forget about the no's on your VDU then with lots of digging in the right places it may happen. I have never paid any attention to any of the numbers on the VDU on all my gold coins, because spending wasted time on that is wasting digging time. I glance at the VDU sometimes but its not involved in my decision making. (It just improves my guesses, the fun bit of 'calling it' before its out the dirt)

Glad you can still get out every now and then. Many wishes on continued good health.

Just enjoy the fun of metal detecting and dig everything in the range (AT Pro) of 38 - 69, this is where all of my gold (jewelry and coin) has been. This is not to say it cannot be lower or high than these values.

You will did a ton of trash in this region, but that is metal detecting...

I hope you find that elusive gold coin...GL & HH
