It's a stretch, but does anyone recognize this cup? UPDATE#1 (new pics/post #11)

Found it today at a homestead built in the 1880's (I know it's not that old...). It's smashed, but it's definitely a cup.

Here's the top (notice the ////// pattern)...

Here's the bottom (no visible markings)...

Here's the handle connection...

Thanks for looking! And thanks in advance for suggestions!

That's the one I buried before you got there.
Glad you found it! ;D

What's the size? With a rivet on the handle it doesn't seem too practical for a "real" cup. Maybe it's from a kids tea set.

I bet it gave you a great tone.

Tin cups were riveted from the Revolutionary War up.

Here are some photos of some cups from that period. They are riveted but not like the ones you show.

Hope this helps but rivet isn't well shown.

Could it be a Tin Well Dipper Cup Minus the Long Handle ?

We used to Run a Bucket Down the Well
Bring it up & Use a dipper To get a Drink.

Example but not the same

I have found three of those types of cups while digging....but they are child size...like a part of a little girls tea party set.......very thin tin and bend easliy

Could be a measuring cup. I have seen sets similar. Some with measurement markings on them, some without. Does it look about the size of "1 cup"?....Also some mills would give away free measuring cups with flower purchases. Most were cheaply made.

Re: UPDATE # 1 (new pics) It's a stretch, but does anyone recognize this cup???

Well, did about an hour's worth of work on the cup today. I am beginning to think it's not a cup, but maybe a server of some kind. So, here goes...
Here's the new and improved cup dealio.

the bottom...

the side...

I should know better than to post anything in the "What Is It' section without specs...lol. It's still pretty smashed, but it's current measurments are approx. 5" from handle to front, about 3 1/2" side to side, and the bottom, is as pictured, between 1 3/4" and 1 7/8"...

Here's a closeup, can you see anything?

I think the handle is going to go a long way in IDing this one, so here it is...

Here's the outside rivet...

and the inside rivet...

Here's a closeup of the /////// design...

And, I am begining to think this looks a little to perfect to be ripped metal right here on the left. Maybe this is where the syrup was poored from...lol.

Anyway, thanks again for all of the help TNeters! This is fun!

I beginning to think maybe a small creamer (soon to be mother in law's suggestion) or a small tin teapot (playset).

Obviously nothing this nice. I think we are getting close!

Ok...I think its a small teapot to the childs set....because the etched design around it is the same as my cups ........

Oh, please tell me about your cups! How old, who made them, where did you get them? Maybe I can Google it after I get that info!
Pictures?

There are no marks on my cups....I dug them all at the same sight....a place that was built in the 1870's....the cups were dug along a slope over looking the river and one under an old stand of lilacs in the same area...But they all have the same pattern as yours.....There is no house there now...and its been gone since about 1920......

Well...that means that yours wasn't accupied after 1920 (if there wasn't a house...lol) and mine was built in the 1880's...found mine on a hill that is part of the yard, and visable from the kitchen (so mom could watch as they played). The place I am hunting is still occupied, in fact one of my best friends lives there. He got it from his fiance's dad. It's been in the family since it was made.
Anyway, if yours is that old, maybe mine is as well. I was hoping they were that old, but there was no way of telling with it still being occupied. Anyway, any chance I could see some pictures...pirty pirty please ;) That is, if you remember where they are..lol.

Re: It's a stretch, but does anyone recognize this cup? UPDATE#1 (new pics/post #11)

Just a questional observation....would a cup designed to hold liquids have rivits that may leak? Even the kiddies liked to have water or something in their toys to imitate adults.
I'm trying to remember the mess kits from when I was in the army early 70's...Part of me wants to say the cups had rivits....but...that era is a tad hazy to me.
Just a thought,
Al

Yes the 1970's and 1960's and back had rivets holding the handles on in the mess kits. Anyhow's mine sure did, "A Btry 4th Msl Bn 44th Arty Ft Bliss Texas" 59-61..

Good Hunting.

Sorry it took me so long to get back...No TT those don't look like marks, They look like more corrosion...too random, without a recognizable shape. This is getting kinda hard...lol
