hey all, i found this detecting on a beach in the lower Puget Sound of Washington State. it was encrusted in a ball of rust the size of a 16oz pop bottle. i do know that there was a Lotta Spanish activity at this beach and was hope it was a old Spanish dagger. it does have a slot down one side of the blade, a friend told me this is so that when you stab something it can be pulled back out easier(breaks the suction)
its about 9 inches long and went threw 2 days of electrolysis to get it looking like that..
any help would be SO cool..
thanks Dank.

Use the highest megapixel setting on your digital camera, the more MP the higher the resolution (aka size) of your picture to begin with.

Take the picture outside in daylight with a darker background and use the Macro setting. (flower icon)

When I take pics indoors, I find a halogen light directly overhead works well.

I think you are talking about the blood groove. http://www.nakededgecutlery.com/bloodgrooves.htm

It is shaped like a throwing knife. Flat from one end to the other. The ones I've seen didn't have handles on them, the were all metal.

I agree, it looks like a throwing knife.

actually I don't think it's a throwing knife but more inline with a boot knife/dagger. Generally a throwing knife will be double edged blade where as this knife only has a single edge.

Here's some single edge throwing knives.

i agree it is a boot knife...the 'ridge' along the blade are the remains of the scabbard.

That is a possibility. Most of the boot knife scabbards I have found are either leather or plastic though. :icon_scratch:

It looks like you preserved it very well with the electrolysis but I cant help with the ID sorry. Strange that it appears to have had no handle. The steel itself is in the shape of the handle. :icon_scratch:

That "groove" is a just the "blood groove" or whatever the official name of it is.

And yes I know that SOME throwing knives have single edge blades, that's why I said "Generally".
