It's a (dug) pocket knife...any way to determine the age?

Hi All,

Here is a pocket knife if REALLY rough condition. Is there any way to determine an approximate age range for this knife? Below are some as found pics and after some cleaning pics. I forgot to add anything for reference. From tip to tip, it measures 3.4 inches and the blade measures approximately 2.6 inches (as best as I can tell).

It was found in the woods that had heavy logging activity in the 1880's-1890's. Relics from that period have been found in the area, but I have also found shotgun brass from the 1920's-1930's in the same area.

Any help is appreciated.
Doug

Don't have a clue about age but you did a heck of a good job cleaning that puppy up. Now use some preservation wax - Renaissance Wax for instance - and enjoy. Nice looking dug knife.

If you count the rings, don't forget to divide by 2. ;D

Cut it in half and count the rings...

That one MAY be hard to nail down as pocket knife designs can be the same for 100 years or more.

THAT'S FUNNY :laughing9:

Thanks for all of the replies to far. I appreciate it.

SS - I think it is a leaf/scroll design. I though at first I could see a "K" on it, but in different lighting I don't think so. The blade isn't going to open. :(

Thanks,
Doug

Hi Breezie,

This was my first attempt at electrolysis. I figured that it was not anything that I could really harm too much. ::) All in all, I am happy with my first try. I still have a little rust to get off before drying and coating it.

I have a couple of more things I am going to work on tonight, if my two year old little girl will let me. I will post before and after pics when they are done.

Thank you for the kind words.

Doug
