Ingram, Texas
Detector(s) used
Minelab E-trac, Tesoro Lobo Supertraq, Gold Bug II, Keene 4" dredge, Keene 3" Hibanker/Dredge Combo
These items were found during a New Year's day dig in the SC Low Country. We need some help identifying. The "bolts" or "nails" seem to be made of brass and have a square washer on them. They are about 4" long.

The rimfire bullet casing (photo not so great) has a "P" raised on the casing. Wondering if this is CW era or more modern.

Finally, have no idea what the other little item is. It is not threaded and almost looks like the primer end for a musket???

Thank you in advance for your responses!

Hey Robert,
Good to see you go posted buddy.
I did a little research on the cartridge. It may be Post C.W. Maybe a company named Phoenix or Peters.

I'll post the rest of our finds tomorrow night when we get back to the "High Country" :D
Thanks again for the hospitality, I had a great time.

From what I can see, I'm going with Phoenix. IF it is, it will be the first one that I have seen posted. If Phoenix, it will date from the 1870's (I believe. I will have to check my research stuff.)

Nice Find!

Not sure about the size of everything from the pictures, but I think the cartridge is a Peters (Remington-Peters) .22 Long or a .32 short depending on the diameter. Not meaning to dispute anyone's guess, but the .38 Long was a lot bigger(longer and fatter). Most of the other parts look like brads that could be linked to some heavy equipment of the CW era, but not sure. The small rusted part does have the shape of a percussion nipple, but no threads are showing and I don't think it's holed all the way through.

Hey Monty,

The reason that I am going with a Phoenix Metallic Cartridge Co. .22 instead of the Peters is because it looks like the P is raised and it looks like there is a circle around the P. I originally said 1870's but I looked at my file wrong. 1870's-1890's is MUCH better.

Here are a couple more photos of the "P" shell casing. It appears to be a .32 cal, as opposed to a .22. The "P" is raised and is in a circle. Sorry for the photos. My camera does not have a Macro setting.

Thanks Doug! Is there a good way to clean old casings without damaging the value of the artifact? I have about 30 more (some really old....I think) that I have found recently, and would like to clean them a bit before posting.

If your camera has no macro, get a jeweler's loupe in 10X, hold it in front of your camera's lens, focus, voila! Instant macro.........NGE

Thanks Kuger! That would be awesome. I got my first .56-56 Spencer a couple of weeks ago and then got a .56-56 C.D. Leet Spencer (1864-1866)!
