It is a part from inside a lock.

Lock part. Square shaft hooked to the knob goes through that hole and will turn and cause the lock to open. Monty

Right. There is a square shaft that connects the 2 knobs. The shaft goes through the hole in your piece. Then when the knob is turned the ears on the piece you found would move the piece that goes into the doorjam from the latch. It probably looked something like this or a similar design. The piece you found would be inside there somewhere.
