Hello all,

Today turned out to be a fantastic day for me. I have been detecting for quite some time now and have enjoyed it a lot. I found some nice things and recently found a place that has yielded many Civil War bullets but today, oh today was fantastic! I was out and had dug two bullets when I got another hit close to my last find. It rang up just like all the others in the dime range so I figured it was yet another bullet. So I dug and scanned, then dug some more and scanned. Nothing so I gave it one more shot and scanned. Ahhhh, the sweet buzz of the pin pointer. So I pushed the shovel in one more time and to my surprise up popped........ MY VERY FIRST BUCKLE!!!!!!!! I was shocked! I was literally trembling, all I could think was get the camera, get the camera, get the camera!!!!!! I knew I had to get shots of this one. Its not pretty, its missing the bits on the back but finally, finally I found something besides bullets or clad. So just a note that even though you THINK you know what you are digging take your time with it and go slow. I was lucky and thankful I didn't ding it or damage it in my haste. I spent the better part of four hours out there and only came up with 21 more bullets before calling it a day. I am happy I will never get rid of it and I already have a plan for displaying it. Thank you patience and detector Gods.

Photos are attached both when found and cleaned up. I love it and its my best find to date. I will be posting some pics of all the bullets I have found and of my nephew finding his first bullet in a few days.

Outstanding! :icon_thumright:

Just goes to show that persistence pays off!

yes, I'd say that was a great day indeed. congrats! that is awesome :icon_thumright:

my heart always skips a beat when finding a belt plate, the shakes will go away in a day or so,

SWEET find!!

Congrats!!!

Thank you all for the great comments but upon closer inspection it may not be a buckle after all. The back doesn't seem right for a buckle. I am going to have to go down to the ole battlefield down the road and get an experts opinion. I still love it.

I think it may be a cartridge box plate - but I have zero expertise on CW relics - There are so many dedicated CW experts on this
site , You'll have your ID in a minute .

Yes it's a Pattern 1839 cartridge box plate

Great find. Something I'll never find out here in Oregon, so from my viewpoint I'd say you have had a double awesome great day.

Thanks for the info and yes, that is what it is. I did some research online and checked out some photos. I am missing the hooks or loops on the back but it is the same.
