Anyways, one thing that I have been annoyed about is not finding a state copper, anyways, today I was going to try some grass plains that were cow fields and had houses on them in the 1700's when I saw that there were a bunch of people hanging out there. I decided to try some woods, they looked tiny and trashy at first, when I got there I noticed that there was no trash so I gave it a try. I quickly got a dime signal on my metal detector, I dug and found a wheatie, three feet away under some vines I got a very high signal, 87 on my T2. I dig a little and stuck the pinpointer in the hole, it beeps loud. Then I see a green disk fall from the side of the hole. I see what looks like a design of weird lines on it, I throw it in my pouch hoping for it to be something cool. I try some more for another hour finding nothing put shotgun shells and foil plus an aluminum or titanium bottle opener.

When I got home after some cleaning I saw a shield, then some letter on the other side. Next I saw the plow and this morning after some more soaking in oil I saw the horses head. I'm happy to say that this is my first New Jersey Copper. It is in pretty rough shape but still IDable.

Diameter is 28mm , I heard that means that is is earlier than the later ones which are 30mm??? Is that correct?

That's a great find. Hope you will show more pics after more cleaning. Congrats. What years was it produced?

This coin was only struck in 1786-1788, though they struck over 4 million in those three years making it a relativity common coin. I'm still wondering how this copper made it to NH though :icon_scratch:

Way to go coinman nice find, vanzutphen

Congrats on your first State Copper, and my favorite to boot, a New Jersey. I am fairly certain after my first look thru all the varieties, that it is a 1786 Maris 16-L variety. Your photo is on an angle which makes it a bit harder for me to get the proper alignment comparisons, but I really think no other variety matches what I see, so going with the 16-L unless someone else chimes in to why not. :) 1786 New Jersey Copper - Maris 16-L. Please PM me the County in NH you found it in. Your coin is the 13th reported found in NH out of over 700 reported ground found to me. It is the 12th 16-L one found. Rarity 2, Common, but not Very Common.........

Thanks Don, Amazing that you can ID it with such poor details and photos. I sent you the PM.

Good luck! You are in the right area to find one. It is coated with just some olive oil to bring out details in the photo.
