I found the Winchester site and found a page that read"How can I find when my rifle was made". so I typed the serial number in and up came 1894 I thought that was amazing, now Im wondering if that rifle is still around and who owns it I would return it to the current owner...HH...Bonz IMG_3976.JPG

It has my initials, but I've never owned a Winchester. ;-)

Does not look to be from a rifle.

Interesting, but what is the connection to a Winchester rifle? I am a bit confused, but that is my natural state!

I was thinking shipping/crate tag maybe? It would be a pretty good coincidence not to match up to a winchester, I think contacting them would be cool for confirmation, I googled 1894 winchester crate and didn't see anything similar though

Does not look like part of a Lyman Products sight, but it could be. Lyman started in 1925.

You might want to let C.L.P. be your biggest clue. Certified Logging Professional is an acronym used by lumberjacks, or it might be "City of L******* Police. Maybe look for cities in your area that start with " L" or "C.L"

What makes you certain it is from a gun? Do you have more pictures? The photo you provided has some of the part cropped out.

It has still got some leather attached to the back very small piece, I am going to keep researching it, just more than a coincidence that I put in the number 1443 and it came up with the date 1894
anyway I am pursuing the Winchester idea, this is possibly off "the rifle sling"....HH....Bonz

mrs winchester build it and they have a great museum there.brad
I was talking about the item in the original post, not the Winchester house. I don't think the item has any Winchester connection.

I did a little searching of Winchester firearm diagrams, and didn't see any gun parts that look like that. I don't believe it to be a gun part. It's too crudely made and finished. I'm leaning toward some sort of ID tag.

Winchester never produced a M94 with a sling. Scabbard, maybe. Either would be aftermarket.

But I'm fairly certain it is not firearm related in any case.

Just a coincidence, Winchester made so many rifles in 1894 that thousands of random numbers would have come up as a serial number of a gun made in 1894. Not gun related.

Nothing to do with a Winchester rifle. Seems people are always thinking they found a civil war item, or gun related thing. Nearly all wishful thinking.
