So out of all the beach glass I've collected I found just one that glows brightly in UV light (blacklight). I was under the impression that it the Uranium, radium or aka Vasoline glass that does this, but that is typically yellowish, but this is a very light blue/turquoise piece that almost seems to glow without the blacklight. Is this so radiant just because of its color or could it have radioligical properties that cause this?

This baby glows like this just being CLOSE to the uv light, no other pieces I have do this at all. I did pendant wrap it, its not the prettiest piece of glass, but if someone wore it to a blacklight nightclub they would be a hit!

Hey Henry,

I've never taken a backlight over my bottles. Do you do this as a matter of course?

Is this to be a pendant?

What are your thoughts on it's previous incarnation?

You may have interest in pursuing this angle, "...Manganese is very sensitive under a black light, providing a yellow to greenish yellow glow. The glowing intensity of authentic purple insulators is fairly easy to measure with the human eye, particularly after viewing several examples with a long wave black light in a completely dark room…" Artificially Induced Colors <<< This article will be of interest to those concerned with the rising tide of irradiated glass in the "market."

I did wrap it as a pendant. I recently purchased a backlight flashlight from Amazon ($15-$20) as a safety item. I figured if any glass does glow I wouldn't drill it...last thing you'd want is radioactive dust in the room. (Although I do only drill underwater and there is no dust, but better safe than sorry) The blacklight has been a lot of fun, you can also use it to find pet stains, scorpions (if you're in that part of the world) or check out your hotel room (if you dare!). I'd be interested if you got one Surf and checked out your collection to see if you had any!

The piece looks like it was a stopper, with a hollow top that cracked off. It looks like it may have melted a bit. Its of course very soft from being surf tumbled for who knows how long.

Here it is with some other pieces to show what its really doing:

That's Kryptonite, really cool stuff but keep it away from Superman.:laughing7:

That pendant is pretty but curious too as to why it is glowing.
