My guess is a mouth piece to a musical instrument but let's see what others say.

It's a clarinet mouthpiece.

If it were a clarinet mouthpiece, wouldn't the place where the reed go be the opposite direction? (air in)
Looks like it may have been the mouth piece cover, but why the opening then?

Here you can see some close ups of a very old clarinet

clarinet on eBay

There is no opening in the cover for the mouth piece...very close though :icon_scratch: but not a clarinet piece me thinks

Strike 1 for me. OK--how about a Bassett Horn mouthpiece?

A soprano saxophone has an exceedingly similar mouthpiece. But, whatever, it's a mouthpiece to a reed instrument. This is solved.

I would guess that it is a whipple tree stick end...part of a horse carriage.

That sounds like a good possibilty ..... could someone have cut it to reveal the inside ?

By the way .... I like your Avitar seagull thing !! I remember channel 6 had clips of them grabbing peoples lunches at Old Orchid Beach , a few years ago .

I dont believe it was cut, but manufactured that way for whatever reason.. ???
Yup, those damn gulls are VERY oppurtunistic...gave em a chance and they will sneak in and steal anything edible. They are a nuisance when we are lobstering and will get into our bait constantly if we dont keep it covered up or have it open too far from us.
