Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England..........

Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England for 2000 year old Roman coins and relics etc and get refused by the land owner who's family gained the land some 1500+ years after the Romans left?

That is to say when seeking things from many hundred of years before this land was claimed by these people i need THEIR permission but if you asked these same people about the Roman invasion on England they would probally tell you how shocking it is that people can just take land like that?

Let the revolution start here

I think you should ask djabend to turn that photo into a drawing of an invading VIKING HORDE with METAL DETECTORS instead of swords! ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

;D ;D ;D

Re: Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England..........

Castlekeep, you hit a funny chord. I am dreadfully honest. I'll chase a guy a mile if I owed him a nickel, etc... But somehow when it comes to stuff buried in the ground, that not even the landowner knows is there, seems like he is no better or worse if/when it's gone. Kind of strange.

Re: Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England..........

I think the landowners value their land as their possessions and all the things living on top or buried. They don't want to see some person take away their stuff even if they didn't know it was there. You can't really blame them.

Re: Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England..........

kind of like a 3 year old with toys -- all of them are mine, mine.mine -- but since they pay the taxes on the land and such and the only thing they really get in return is the ability to say "NO" thus controlling which private persons can or can not come on "their" land --- they want to feel their getting their moneys worth for the taxes they pay and thus say NO since they don't want you to gain or benefit anything out of "their land" esp if its worth $$$

Re: Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England..........

Bring a back up detector and when they say no you say to them, "that's too bad I brought an extra detector for you to use too, figured you might have been interested in digging a few relics to show some of the history of your land to your friends, guess not." Smile and walk away. May not help but it would give me some satisfaction to the "no" answer. Then again, the right person may have a sudden change of heart. You never know. :)

Re: Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England..........

even better ---- say early on --- before the "no" that I was hope that "we" could hunt the property -- I have a spare detector you could use --you never know what interesting historical things we might find --- and of course make sure of the keeping of the the finds arrangement BEFORE HUNTING and a 50/50 split if a big cache is found ;) --- Ivan

buckle boy is right, have that picture redone with metal detecters in their hands that would be a great picture and repost it........yea

Re: Isn't it ironic when i ask for permission to hunt land here in England......

Yes great advise on how to gain permission but i was just saying how ironic it is you NEED to ask to hunt for things left behind on land hundreds of years before these land owners owned it

Great idea for the picture but i'm not good at stuff like that, but if anyone wants to download it and alter it i'll repost it up ;D

What you do is send some type of an invite to the landowner, something imperative, like dinner with the Queen Mum at Buckingham Palace or a Spice Girls performance at Royal Albert Hall ::) ....then trespass when they are off to the function.

It would be rather a long dinner as the Queen Mum is dead :o

Please no more on gaining permission as i've enough land to hunt until the Romans invade again ;D

Its ironic that my original statement was about irony not gaining permission LOL ::) ::) ::)

oops she is dead just found that out today how sad

Other side of the coin

I had a river house which I lived in year round. It had a perfect canoe launch and take out site. I originally was fine letting people launch and pull out there.
But they got worse and worse! They would go under our house (built on stilts for floods) and take our chairs out to the waters edge and then leave them there. They would put trash (even glass bottles) in our fire barrel. The straw that broke the camels back was when I came home one Sunday planning to launch my own bass boat only to find about 15 cars parked in my yard so that the canoers would not have to ride in one car back to the public parking (about 5 miles).

So yes I used my ownership rights put up a fence and gate. Even then I had to go out and explain to some people that they are correct, I do not own the river. But unless they planned to stay in the river all night I do own the land they would have to cross to get in and out of it. I once even had to explain this to a game warden. After I produced my 9mm and got his name and badge number he decided to stay out of it and go on down the river.

Oh and the canoers are all outdoors types right. So they should understand no or low impact. Me and my wife canoed down behind some of these annual canoers and got three canoes full of discarded trash, including full fried chicken boxes just dropped on the sandbar.

When you run into one of these mean landowners who will not let you on their land, you just do not know what they have been through with the last guy who wanted to use their land for something. Plus, they may be considering the potentail financial risk involved. If you go on their land and get hurt, say stung by bees which you are allergic to, they could be sued.

Just thank them for their time and leave. There is always other places to go.

Good post..sorry people took advantage of you...
I think that is why we have trouble getting onto land to detect. They deal with hunters, fisherman, whoever just tresspassing and they get tired of dealing with people.
I have always used your advice....when denied permission i say thank you for your time and go on my way...

I find it really sad here in England you in the U.S.A need to use a gun to protect you property or your rights just as it's equally nice here in England to know if we challenge somebody we won't get a gun pulled on us :o
