this was a larger piece when I found it.. it came from a waterlogged site. A peat bog. most of the disinagrated in my hand. I was able to keep this peice wet until I got it in a mixture of white glue and water.

looks like a woven something im not familiar with anything like that but could be a few different things like a toolkit pouch or etc. was your site out in the middle of nowhere or near farms or? maybe it could be old clothing? neat

anything is possible of course but if you saw the context that Item was in.... literally stuck between pottery shards. don't even know if I can call them shards. over 12 inches in diameter. I'm pretty sure.... but I think I would like to hear it corroborated. I have something else perishable but almost don't even wanna post it anticipating a bashing. cool though huh

well now you mentioned it soo get it up on the board whoever bashes it bash back

in that context most likely a..... well i don't know lol its something though

Allright...allright.... Ha ha

you can send it to me in pm i wont bash you

I put a lot of work into this.. artifact or no artifact. stabilizing waterlogged wood turned out to be a lot more difficult than any of my other preservation efforts. I kept this submerged 4 over a month while I researched. turns out the surface tension of water can be pretty destructive as it evaporates. aftereid long time in water there's not much left of the woods cell structure. so the waters pretty much holding it together. as it dries the surface tension of the water pulls on the cell walls collapsing them shrinking and deforming the object. Sooo.. to stop that from happening I replaced the cellulose "wood" with sucrose" sugar". it has almost identical cell structure. but enough with all that mumbo jumbo.. remember the context. what do you think?

ok..wow...but what confuses me is that there is bark still left on the pc at least im assuming thats what it is and the groove at bottom i cant see well... i'm wondering what you think it is ....giving its context? if you believe this to be an artifact the only thing i can assume you might think it could be is a crutch or walking stick unless you know something more about the groove than what i can determine...?

i know you found this "in conditions" but it seems if it were well preserved wood it would look different (but what do i know) but that doesn't exlplain the groove or it seeming to have been cut. Gots me man.

There is two grooves. One is further up the shaft. if cordage was tied to both grooves it would hang over your shoulder quite nicely. besides hafting through the handle I have seen examples of strapping a celt or an adze to the top so the width runs perpendicular to the handle. there were still Ais tribe members here when the 1715 shipwrecks happened a long this coast.

yeah that's kinda where I'm at with it.. it was a good lesson in wood preservation though. Lol.

awesome....I don't know why I didn't think about it being used as an adze but yes that could very well be but what are the chances of bark still being on the pc?

I was thinking that too.. but then I thought if basket material can make it then why not. they pulled up maze and gourds.. from much older waterlogged sites that still had color. have you ever heard of vero man? that's 15 minutes from my house
